Overthinking, yes, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. This is really cool |

I don't see a point in three alphabets two maybe but who needs three alphabets it seems highly unnecessary |

Kanji isn't really suitable to academic papers.
Hiragana and katakana maybe, but now kanji, expecially in scientific essays. Latin translitterations are becoming more and more common, as well as plain English papers. |

Good sir, there is no such thing as overthinking. |

With three languages, perhaps we are looking at Earthian, Pegasian, and Unicornian?
So from top to bottom we have: A pegasus (probably Derpy) was enlisted to float at the top of the banner and write, and the work of a pegasus surveyor, both in simple Latin letters that they are able to use their wings to create Printed (or frosted) works of earth ponies, in a similar text to what the pegasai use, only something easier to write by hoof or mouth Two Canterlotian publications by unicorns, both prominently using unicorn horns, an artifact from old days when magic tomes were kept secret from the other races, which uses complex patterns only writable through unicorn magic |

The second wingdings font was the school talent show flier, not a Canterlot publication. |

^Ah, I thought iw as looking at something else.
Answer: Namby-Pamby was a unicorn, published for the school in Unicorn. Diamond Tiara took over, started publishing in Earthian. It's a theory we can watch for, too: if we can read the next thing published by the school, then we are reading Pegasian from Featherweight. |

I like the idea of the pictograms being sort of a "standard" between the alphabets.
And yeah, this is overanalyzation since the animators probably didn't put too much thought into the pony alphabet but these theories about the inconsistencies make the world the show takes place in seem that much more interesting. |

I was going to say you were overthinking it, but then you commented on my luscious beard. |

Definitely overthinking, but you say that as if it's a bad thing. :^)
Since we've seen proper writing, I tend to assume that the second sort of alphabet (the Foal Free Press / Sisterhooves Social / Mare-Do-Well grouping) are just low-res animations of Latin letters. Of course, it's entirely possible that you're correct an it's a different alphabet -- since writing is probably more effort for earth ponies and pegasi, it stands to reason their alphabet would be as simple as possible. Of course, the meta-reason for the pictograms is the same -- it gets information across better than text in a Flash animation. But let's think in-universe. Perhaps ponies are naturally more inclined to artistic talent than we are, and less to verbal reasoning. It would certainly explain the abundance of art and music cutie marks. If Equestria is a rich land well-protected by the Elements of Harmony, you get plenty of leisure time to develop cultural traditions to exercise those preferences. Maybe drawing simple diagrams or faces as aides-de-memoire comes to ponies more naturally than writing down names or jotting notes. As one example, if your cutie mark is partially synonymous with your name, your cutie mark could easily work as well as a signature. |
