The writers have never been amazing. They write children's books for Christ's sake. They're good at what they do which is write a nice simple and entertaining story. They do tend to screw around with a pony's personality a lot more than they should, but that's what makes their personalities so dynamic and attractive. Sometimes they are very cut and dry and other times they're not. It's a fact I've learned to embrace. |

Then again, Fluttershy is almost always boring unless she's starring in her own episode, and Rainbow Dash has been made the official butt-monkey this season. And Twilight rarely even shows up unless it's her episode. |

Rarity was given the name "Schmoopy Poo" by her parents but in adolescence she began insisting they call her "Rarity" instead. She has never told anyone in Ponyville she was ever named differently. |

Not at all Anon, I fucking hate how they've undone most of her characterization this season. She's nearly as bad as Trixie was. Trixie at least has an excuse in being a street performer, since you do have to have a certain attitude, but Dash has become a complete jerk, and whenever she's comedic relief it's usually at her expense. I cringed throughout the Cider Squeezy episode.
She was cool again in Hurricane Fluttershy, though. And Reading Rainbow (I refuse to call it by any other name) was nice and offered a nice bit of characterization for her. But jeez, early season 2 was just unfair to her. |

Rarity is a "self-made pony". Everything about her, from the way she styles her mane, the way she wears her makeup, her posh accent, and her charming manners, is a deliberate, calculated act. She has one goal in life--to rise above her humble Ponyville origins and become a unicorn aristocrat. Unfortunately, the only way she can do that in the feudal, class-conscious Equestrian unicorn society is to catch the eye of some prince like Blueblood.
She is a gold-digger, but amazingly enough, is able to make being one look respectable. |

I think he's on to something.
Rarity is amazing when the episodes focus on her. I'd go as far to say that Rarity-centric episodes are the best in the whole damn series (I know they're my favorites). In "Putting Your Hoof Down," does Rarity count as a minor role or a main role? Because that's the one episode where I think they do a good job of using her as a supporting character. |

Rarity has been a diva from the very first moments of the show. She always will be. Merriweather didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Rarity was and always will be a diva. When episodes concern her the most, naturally they'll show more sides to her story from her perspective.
But it's refreshing to have a diva character who isn't vain 100% of the time and she actually helps her friends out almost constantly. Also, the writers in general are damn amazing considering they work with the childrens' cartoons constraints and put in so much humor in every episode. |
