Name translations in Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan diverse greatly due to different habit in language usage. It's also added more difficulty to reverse translate what these names are about.
"Eastern Broadcasting Informercial" is poking at an actual existing cable channel/group in Taiwan which possess informercial channels largely resemble the comic strip above. That group also has some low-quality news channels and an animation channel for children, whose "snail" logo is just like the one you see in upper-left corner. That channel broadcasts a well-redubbed but heavily (destructively) reedited version of Spongebob Squarepant, which largely shaped public (mis-)perception of what Spongebob series is like. Edited to fit "children channel" while it's more proper for channels like Cartoon Network. MLP is now newly broadcasted in the same channel, the news has generated fears among fans in Taiwan that similar damage would be done to Little Pony G4 series. Whether it would be really that devastating is yet to be seen. Name-poking in the comic above is referred to the leaked early naming translation from the very channel, which sounds too much like the "products" appeared in the 4koma and had enraged fans. |
