I don't mean slave in the traditional sense, but there is a strong social predilection that tends to force them towards a life of agriculture.

It was a fact of life at the beginning of Equestria, and while it is certainly not as bad a s it once was, very few earth ponies ever seem to rise out of the agricultural role. There have indeed been earth ponies in positions of authority but not beyond their own communities.

@Feral

Rainbow Dash sure as hell doesn't work as hard as Applejack

A) Agriculture =/= slave
B) Rainbow Dash is a terrible worker. that has nothing to do with her race. Fluttershy probably works pretty fucking hard taking care of all those animals.

@Clopitor

First, Rainbow Dash works?

Second, hasn't it been established that Earth Ponies have some kind of magic connection to the well earth that lets them be better farmers and what not than the other 2 pony types?

It's why the Pegasi keep the weather in check and the unicorns..... um.... what DO the unicorns do?

And I'm sure if the Earth ponies were ever treated as slaves they would willingly die rather than make food for their oppressors. At least the stronger willed ones. The weaker ones probably would give in.

Whoops, 589 was me.
Anyway, farming and earth-related activities are earth ponies' strengths. They make their own money and own their own land. They also have all the same rights and responsibilities as the other two.

And also, Hearths Warming Eve suggested Pegasi and Unicorns are unable to grow food.

Without the Earth Ponies they'd starve.

I would say Earth Ponies are the dominant race if that's true.

I'm not saying that they don't have the comparative advantage in the realm of agriculture, and I guess my use of the word slave was rather ambiguous and not necessarily accurate. I just mean that they tend to be stuck in agricultural roles. Obviously there is not enough empirical data to truly prove these claims, so the majority is based upon the examination of the societies that exist in Equestria. Obviously we can say that the unicorns in Canterlot are in a higher economic bracket than the earth ponies of Ponyville. (I don't know how, but they just are.)

You could say that pegasi have the same sort of automatic classification as weather related workers as well, but that does seem to be at the better end of the spectrum.

What it all really some down to is the fact that earth ponies do not posses any exclusive racial talents, in the sense that only pegasi can fly, and only unicorn can use magic. All ponies can farm, but earth ponies do it the best, or at least they can raise crops the best. Flim and Flam demonstrate that earth ponies do not hold a monopoly on the comparative advantage when it comes to harvesting or food processing.

At any rate I'm sure there are many arguments against my observations, and I'm not saying they are irrefutable. I'm just saying that this is the impression that I get from Equestrian society.

Clopitor, don't forget that Sapphire Shores, Photo Finish (and all of her assistants), Octavia, Mayor Mare, The Oranges (and all of their guests), Bruce Mane, Caesar, Frederic Horseshoepin, Hoity Toity, the jewelry shop owner, at least one doctor, and Pishposh are all earth ponies.
Saying that unicorns are automatically better off economically is completely ungrounded.

@Feral

I never said that earth ponies were strictly agricultural and I did make concession that there were earth ponies in position of power. I did say though that Canterlot seems to be almost exclusively unicorns though, and Canterlot is regarded as the capital city. However I stand by the fact that outside of the realm of agriculture, earth ponies are at a disadvantage to both pegasi and unicorns which both have far more effective methods of object manipulation. To say that it is impossible for them to exist in roles outside of agriculture is untrue.

The main thing is that earth ponies have the strict comparative advantage in the realm of agriculture, but are at a disadvantage almost everywhere else. (Their advantage in terms of physical attributes has never been explicitly stated and is clearly debatable through in show demonstrations. e.g: Iron Pony Competition.) Magic and prehensile wings just allow for higher levels of productivity in almost any task.

So, very explicitly, my point is that while earth ponies can do almost any task that the others can do that is not flight, or magic related, the other races can do it better due to their own unique capabilities. Agriculture is the only task that we have seen explicit advantage in, and so it only makes logical sense that they should typically specialize in it.

So I ask that if you provide a rebuttal, try to think not in terms of examples, but in terms of each races inherent capabilities. Ask which race would be better suited for which task and why.
