In a very slightly related note and not at all pony related (sorry:\/)
I was curious if any of you have Naval experience, specifically with submarines. I'm going active duty late august and will be on one for like 4 years so I want to know what to expect (besides cramped), no one i know IRL has any idea. Even those i know in the Navy say they were on carriers or was a CB so they have no idea what to tell me ... i'd figure i might as well ask here. |

@RepentantAnon i dunno what to tell you, all i know is they are putting me through a year of IT school so i can fix sonar on a sub for 4 years and are paying me out the ass to do it, i ain't complaining lol |

Yurp, thank you for your service.
Don't know a thing about subs nor have I heard from any family or friends in the Navy. |

Yurp, if it's not too much trouble, what types of 7.62 rounds do you use for the 240? (specifically the one mounted there if the types differ in different situations)
AP? FMJ? |

Apples. |

@Jackarunda FMJ, and it's no trouble at all; FMJ is the norm ... 7.62 NATO AP isn't really used much for whatever reason |

Welcome aboard, Yurp! Sadly, the Navy has yet to figure a way to carry helicopters, so I've got no experience on subs. Good luck being a bubblehead though; sounds like a good rating to have. |

Meant to say they've yet to figure a way to carry helos on subs... the Navy has most certainly figured out how to carry 'em on surface ships. I derped... |

Are you on Fort Rucker? |

I had a friend who was a nuke tech on a sub, only knew him after his hitch though. He seemed pretty sane, so I guess the tight quarters aren't too hard to cope with.
From what I recall of his stories, it takes a cross-section of unusual personalities to staff a sub, which isn't usually bad as long as you're pretty broadminded and accepting about people. I guess the lesson is that a little love and tolerance will go a long way toward keeping on good terms with your neighbors down there! Good luck with your hitch. |

@anon198 ... i was only 3 points from the NUC program ... my title is "Submarine Electronics Computer field (SECF)" it pretty much is an underwater IT guy ... i will be mostly sonar technician but i'm qualified for general electronics technitian, and thanks :D
@ForcedFire unfortunately no, im at APG (a terrible base)then somewhere in Connecticut then the deep blue |

@SH60AWS i almost went aviation, decided since i don't have claustrophobia and could use sub pay i would be a bubble head |

/salute Yurp
I can only imagine what it's like on a sub, but I reckon it's not easy just from a psychological standpoint. But I'm sure you won't let your fellow Bronies, your family and your country down. I wish you all the best. |
