She knew that that was it as she dropped on her knees then lay down on the soft, welcoming snow. As if taunting her failed dexterity, the night blizzard seemed to be dying away now, and dawn would break soon.
None of that would make a difference now. Just a filly who nopony would remember, who never did anything worth mentioning during her insignificant, short life. She was not among the ones whose life or death would matter at the end, and history would never recall her name. Not even a cutie mark. Oddly, the realization came as a comforting thought now, knowing that in her ultimate failure she was free from any past expectations anypony ever had of her, even from the ones she set for herself in arrogant ignorance. The cold creeping down inside her delicate little bones seemed to be far away. Even the pain from her broken wing seemed to be a mirage of a thought now. She closed her eyes one last time, and finally let go of it all. |
