They are possibly following Word of Faust, which says that NMM might've been an extension of an unknown dark force that possessed Luna. I don't know much else since I've forgotten the real reason...interpretations I guess? |

Wow Dreihorn, how stupid can you be? Who gives a shit if they're separating the two things or not? |
| Anonymous #1245926 3 months ago |
Some of the more artistic pieces may be separating them for the purpose of contrast, but the others are just more stupid fandom bullshit that fucks with everything. Don't let it bother you. This fandom, like all fandoms, has a lot of stupid people who do stupid things and make stupid pictures based on stupid ideas. It's life. |
| DreihornKing #1245928 3 months ago |
But if that is the case SpecialAnon, then why haven't we seen something like "The Return of Nightmare Moon" or at least the force that possessed her? And even if it was some "unknown dark force", that doesn't explain the tendency to portray her as Luna's twin or sister. |

My headcannon is that Luna & Nightmare Moons relationship is sorta like Eddie Brock and Venom's relationship. |
| TenchiFreak5 #1245933 3 months ago |
The idea that Nightmare Moon was an entirely separate being that took over Luna when she was susceptible to it is hardly a new one. It's been over a year since I joined this fandom, and there was quite a lot of stuff that portrayed Luna and NMM as two separate beings all the way back then too (off the top of my head, The Party Never Ended did so way back in May), with the other being generally being called "Nightmare" when she was separate from Luna.
As for why, it is probably because it allows you to do more with the character than if NMM was purely a Luna construct. For example, you can have the being of "Nightmare" attack the Elements of Harmony or Celly when they are two different beings. |

@Anon922
How dare he ask an inocent question. He should be beaten, hung, and raped! Yes, in that order. |
| DreihornKing #1245947 3 months ago |
@Anon922: I'm not up in arms about it man. I'm just honestly curious. It's an odd idea that might have good storytelling potential, provided that the explanation for why they are separated makes some sort of sense.
@Anon926: I realize & recognize the artistic contrast idea, that's not what makes me curious about it. It's more things like Nyx, Woonastuck, Nightmother Moon, and pictures like the bottom far right one, with Celestia, Luna, Discord and Nightmare Moon as kids with Lauren Faust and baby Cadence that's gotten me interested in the idea. |
| DreihornKing #1245969 3 months ago |
@Saint_Braeburn: To be honest, that kind of connection would make far more sense than the whole "they are two separate beings who somehow got fused together" sort of thing that a number of fans seem to be doing. But if that's the case, then where did "Nightmare" come from? And what happened to it after Luna was freed by the Elements of Harmony? Was it destroyed? Or is it like the Venom symbiote, a being that's looking for a new host?
@TenchiFreak5: That's probably the best explanation for this whole phenomenon. I know that seems to be the case with the "Past Sins" fanfic series, but as for other fandom ideas, I'm kind of baffled. That's why I actually posted this, so that I could try and learn what those ideas might be. |

1) Each tumblr is effectively an AU (alternate universe). None of them count towards canon interpretation.
2) Nyx is a personality, pulled out of Luna via magic and given independence. In other words, NMM wasn't a separate entity until somepony caused it. 3) Those fanarts... really? 1+3 appear more like an 'opposite sides of a coin" thing, and 2+4 are clearly just for cuteness. Specifically, #4 no more claims NMM is a separate entity than it does that Faust is an alicorn who raised all the divines as her children together. You're just reading too much into, bro. I suggest you not read this: ![]() |

That's a lot of post in the time it took me to type. I forgot about the whole "nightmare" thing.
Here's source of that:>>86137 But I hope my response wasn't seen as hostile, that seems to be the case on this site. But I never really saw that stuff as separation of the entities, but I guess the best explanation would be that people are trying to exonerate Luna. Saying she was "possessed" gives her a free pass on anything NMM did. |
| Hakuzo #1246007 3 months ago |
Well, in the case of Past Sins, or any other work that wants to take place after the defeat of Nightmare Moon, it allows you to use an established character without having to remove or villainize Luna again. |
| DreihornKing #1246012 3 months ago |
@NonAnon: I realize that the last set of images doesn't quite fit into what I'm trying to demonstrate, but they were the closest I could come up with.
And the thing is, I'm well-aware that things like the tumblrs are AUs. What I'm curious about is the actual LOGIC behind it, even if it's something like the Nyx thing. I like to study stories, and so far I haven't seen almost any explanations behind the usage of Nightmare Moon as separate from Luna. And I'll be honest, I don't watch South Park, so i don't really get what you're referencing. |
| DreihornKing #1246029 3 months ago |
@NonAnon: No worries man, you didn't seem hostile. And I appreciate that link; it's nice to see what Faust's approach would have been had she been asked to approach the subject.
@Hakuzo: That does seem to be one of the prevailing reasons for using her. I will admit, Nightmare Moon was rather under-utilized at just two episodes. I can see why so many fans want to explore her more deeply than what we got in the series. |

Shot you a PM Dreihorn. Hope it helps. |
| DreihornKing #1246115 3 months ago |
Much appreciated Mugen_Kagemaru. The PM helped.
But yeah, thank you all for the civil discussion and help, I do greatly appreciate it. |
| Nulono #1246555 3 months ago |
Luna herself referred to NMM in the first person. |
| egophiliac #1246590 3 months ago |
Moonstuck is definitely AU, and not remotely serious to begin with. (Nightmare Woon is a separate Woona who fell off the moon because its gravity was turned off, for heaven's sake.) |
| Nightweaver20xx #1246786 3 months ago |
It's all psychological symbolism. Like your ego or id made into a physical manifestation, while you yourself are also present. It's new age hipster bullshit or something that came from Sigmund Freud, I don't know. I'm trying to remember my college classes and it's all coming back as a swirl of colors and drinking and boring lectures. |
