They don't use corn pipes. Those are cheap, don't draw easily, and don't last. Well read men use wooden pipes, like a gentlemen.
As to why, it's because a cigar or cigarette knocks ash onto the pages and yourself if you're sitting down reading. A pipe contains its ash until you empty it. It also produces a pleasant aroma not really seen in other forms of tobacco. |

I've actually smoked pipes for years and I can tell you both have their advantages.
Briar Pipes get better with time. You have to build up a good cake on the inside before they really start mellow and keep an even and cool smoke the whole way through. If you rub a little oil on them (the outside) while they are hot you can make sure the wood keeps nice and supple and will age very well. Corncobs are good for a smoke straight away. You don't really have to break them in and they're great for trying out new tobaccos or for taking with you if you're going outdoors or on a trip. They're inexpensive but will provide a very good smoke that's usually cool and even. Over time they sour. You can fix that with a little honey and strong proofed whiskey but it's not really worth the effort. They shouldn't run you more than 10 bucks. |
