Derpy necessarily isn't mentally retarded. She's like Wheatly from Portal 2, or Ed from Good Burger. Just not up there in thinking power. But not a permanently stupid character. Also, people seem to confuse clumsiness with low intelligence. Just look at me! I'm a farce, yet of high knowing. |

^Not to mention the idea that (even if she was disabled) that she shouldn't be allowed physical love or be found attractive) is kind of depressing. I'd like to think that even if I was mentally challenged in some way people could still find me attractive and what not. Mostly though, I guess I feel guilty because my first instinct is to take care of her and protect her. I want to make sure nobody around her hurts her or makes her feel bad. |

Derpy has a certain condition where the ligaments that control eye movement are damaged and therefore unsynchronized. It causes wall eyes and clumsiness as a result of disorientation. She's probably pretty smart, all things considered. She just has a goofy eye and is cataclysm-prone. Good thing ponies are descended from unkillable fluff pones, or else Derpy would have Twilight's death on her hooves. |
