Unicorns are very much overpowered in the show. This helps to keep their numbers in check so that Earth ponies can actually feel important.
Pegasi have a similar population control mechanic. Some of them are born without the ability to stand on clouds! (Scootaloo was fortunate enough to be born ON the ground.) |

o.O Earth ponies can control Geologiccal phnemenon. How are they underpowered? They have a Green Thumb...and the ability to make volcanoes go boom and earthquakes and such. THis hasn't made it into the show cuz those are not constructive uses of the power.
Its well known the areas near volcanoes can become very fertile~ |

@020, yeah, we've never seen anything even REMOTELY like that in the show. Furthermore, anything an earth pony can do, Twilight can do better. Harvesting apples? Bitch, please; Twilight can harvest 1/3 of the Apple family orchard with a single spell. Earthquakes and volcanoes? I bet she could do those too. "Green thumb"? I doubt that unicorns would be UN-able to grow a garden if they wanted to. They just don't, because that's the work of lower class "earth" pony peasants.
