This is a story of friendship.

The extraordinarily powerful magic coursing through her little body allowed Twilight to outlive all of her friends by decades, but even she eventually reached the end of her journey. She had become at first slightly, then very eccentric in her old age, constantly reading, sleeping on piles of books, and ranting to herself. As court mage, Celestia was always near her, even in the final days. It pained the princess to see her former student, once so bright and sharp, dulled by decades of overwork and constant drive to perfection. One day, late in the evening, Celestia entered Twilight's chamber and found the unicorn, sallow and gaunt, asleep on a pile of books. Seeing her, the princess knew it was time.

Twilight slowly roused and lifted her head shakily to her beloved mentor. "P...princess, I d...discovered a new spell to... today." Her voice was wizened with age, but still had that touch of enthusiasm that she had nearly a hundred years ago, when she was young.

"That's wonderful... Twilight. Maybe you could show it to me... sometime." Celestia's voice broke on the last word and she turned away.

Twilight slowly climbed down the stack of books and wearily stumbled over to her former mentor. "Princess... wh... what's wrong?"

Celestia turned back to her old friend. The lines in Twilight's face were deep, her eyes sunken, yet her hair still retained some of the bright purple and magenta it had earlier in life. A tear came to her eye despite herself, and she bit her lip. "Oh... Twilight... I don't want to lose you."

Twilight's eyes shook with emotion, but she smiled weakly at the princess. "Don't cry, princess... it's OK. Every pony... every pony has their time."

Celestia couldn't stand it anymore. She reached out and embraced her student, her friend, someone who'd been like a daughter to her. She wrapped her front hooves around the ailling, weak frame of the unicorn and held her for what seemed like minutes.

Twilight could hear Celestia's soft sobs, and felt her body shake slightly as she held her. Twilight sighed softly and laid her head gently on the princess's powerful shoulder.

"Dear Princess Celestia... Today I learned that life doesn't last forever... but that the magic of friendship is eternal... All that you... need... is love.

Always your faithful student... Twilight... Sparkle~"

Twilight gave one final sigh, and Celestia felt her body go limp in her embrace. The sorrow now came full force, washing over the eternal alicorn like a wave. She hugged Twilight's lifeless body tightly to her.

"Noooo! Not this pony! Anyone but this pony! Ohhh god...no...Twilight..."

Twilight Sparkle died that day, aged 119 years, 2 months shy of her 120th birthday.

She had outlived every one of her friends by almost two decades... all except one.

Celestia never forgot her dear student and colleague, even thousands of years later, when she herself had become wizened with age.

Nightweaver: she outlived Spike, or she didn't consider him a friend?

Actually, given that there are golden godly apple things, they could grant immortality to people. omo Just saying...

"Sure is Twilight. In the end, you and your friends will pass away, one by one, until you're all laying in the ground, being eaten by worms and maggots. And I'll still be alive, lol."
