The first time I battled Red was amazing.
I was a kid, tromping around in Mt. Silver, not really knowing what I was doing. Then I talked to the only guy in the whole place and: "..." And I remembered, "That's me..." The most epic battle ever. Hands down. |

I could never beat Red. Not that I didn't have a strong enough team, but rather, I was Red. I poured my heart and soul into the first gen and worked so hard to be the best.
I could get red down to his last Pokemon. but I could never take away what He, what I, did to get there. I would turn off he game. |

I remember demolishing him down to his Rest-happy Snorlax, and then getting stonewalled until I remembered I could just Guillotine it and call it a day. |

I remember that day. It was a long and hard battle that took hours to finish. I stayed up all night batteries fully charged pop-tarts & glass of mountain dew on my counter. My door was locked, nothing was going to disturbed me. It was a school night but I didn't care. Just some stupid quiz I could do with my eyes closed. This was more important. The battle of my childhood.
I had heard from a friend that there was a trainer who lived at the top of Mt. Silver. He did not say who this trainer was, only that he was the strongest in the game. I laughed it off thinking that I could best this trainer, & that I was the only one who was the strongest in my own game...How foolish I was to think that. Still I readied myself, I had the best of my pokemon as my team. Items at the ready & prepared for a fight I turned on my game loaded my save file & began my journey again...My destination Mt. Silver. I searched the mountain high & low until I finally found him...The trainer my friend told me about. I rushed at his sprite, eager to engage a battle..If only I had stop to look at him for a moment, but it was too late, I had already pressed "A". He looked at me and said nothing only a "..." As if I was only a hindrance in his eyes. The battle had started...But I was not prepared for who I was facing. As the began I took a close look at my opponent. At first I didn't remember who this trainer was. But after a few moments I realized who it was & my guess was confirm by the text when it said "Trainer Red wants to fight" Shocked, I paused for a minute as memories of the old game came flooding back full force. Then when I came back from memory lane I looked at Red again & grinned with delight. "So this is it?" I said to myself. "The old me vs the new me." Just hearing myself say those words made me even more eager. until I finally asked the question. "Who Will WIN?" Not ready to be out done by a mere cpu version of myself I pulled out my pokemon and began to battle. The fight lasted for quite some time I could tell cause my eyes were getting heavy with no sleep & I could hear the sounds that only the dead of night could offer. I could feel body urging me to sleep, that this could wait another night. But I shook my head, ate my pop-tart & drank some Dew. I was not gonna let this fight end just yet. I was determined to win...Even if I had to stay up all night. Fight had continued on, I had finished my snacks that had kept me up a long time ago. Now running on only fumes & sheer will power did I press on. The fight was only half way over, yet I could feel my gameboy strain from the long overuse. I took down two of his pokemon & I was down to three. I was almost there. I was tired, too tired to carry on. Red was winning the battle with his Snolax. My game boy was running really low on batteries. It was only a matter of time before either I was defeated or the game would turn off. Either way, Red would win. I was down to my last pokemon. With two Full Restores, and one Max Either. I looked at my pokemon. All of them but my golem had been defeated. I was ready to give in. Ready to surrender, raise the white flag to both the game & to the sandman that was calling to me. As I was going to shut off, I took one more look and saw my glimmer of hope. Hitmonchan was still alive! 1hp...But still alive! In my tired state I forgot that I saved him for later. With that revelation upon me I felt myself feeling fired up! I wasted no time with the full restore as I sent him out to battle. I made Hitmonchan use a Comet/Mega punch combo that gave him the first strike. After some time Snorlax went down. Venusaur was next, lucky Hitmonchan had Fire punch. Venusaur went down quickly. Charizard was next, and Hitmonchan was hurt pretty bad. I switched him out with Golem, and used my last two items on Hitmonchan. there wasn't enough for Golem. He wasn't strong enough to take on Charizard by himself. With no regrets I made Golem Self-Destruct. Blastoise was Red's final pokemon & Hitmonchan mine. Hitmonchan didn't match up to Blastoise's DEF, but he was faster. Using Comet/Thunder/Mega Punch combo I had victory in my grasp. And I did it! I had beaten Red my former self. He didn't say anything when I defeated him. Of course he didn't need to say anything. In my head all I could see was him smiling & tipping his hat. After the epic battle that had ensue I saved my game & then finally as if it was waiting for me to finish my batteries died. With joy in my heart & a tired mind I retired to bed to dream. Of everything children can dream about. ..."HEY COME ON YOU'RE GONNA BE LATE FOR SCHOOL!"...I wasn't prepared for this... |
