Couple things: I believe Faust said that Pinkie rents her room from the Pies. But seeing how they are her employers, one could say her room is free. Also: "Federal Credit Union"? Nah man, "Royal Credit Ministry" seems more fitting. Alright, I need to get more drunk so I stop thinking about this. |

@Rostam: I admit, Fluttershy's case is the most speculative, but I could find no other explanation for how a young 20-something with no marketable skills already owns her own home.
"Loves Animals"? My 8 year old niece has those qualifications and she don't own shit. The others are easier to explain. Twilight has a rich family...Rarity borrowed money from her parents...Dash is up to her eyeballs in mortgage debt...Pinkie is practically the adopted daughter of the Cakes...and AppleJack; the farm. |
| Fronzel #1212597 3 months ago |
I can totally believe Fluttershy being intimidated by the difficulty of planning for retirement with limited means and avoiding talking about it. |
| Drasvin #1212630 3 months ago |
@Ginger_Fig But in the world of Equestria, Fluttershy does have somewhat marketable skills. Remember, virtually all aspects of nature are handled by the ponies, so a pony skilled at taking care of animals would be able to fill a government job on par with the weather team.
Also I read somewhere that half of Pinkie's pay is in cupcakes. Though maybe she's getting a little extra income due to babysitting the Baby Cakes. And I doubt Rainbow Dash is the supervisor for the whole Weather Team. She's too self-centric, impulsive, and lazy to be able to maintain a position with that many responsibilities. I would imagine she would be the one in charge of the crew responsible for clearing the skies and bringing the sunny days. Most of the time when we see her working or her work referenced, it has to do with clearing the skies over ponyville. That and clearing the skies works well with her special talents. All a pony has to do to clear the sky is buck the clouds to destroy them and Rainbow's speed allows her to traverse the distance between a given group of clouds quickly. As for her house, it is made out of clouds, the material that generally gets destroyed to clear the skies anyway, so it's possible that the building materials for her house are virtually free. She would just have to pay some pony to put it all together in an awesome house. All-in-all this is a pretty nice analysis of their financial prospects. |

Fluttershy does "love animals" but her talent is far more in depth then that. Also, her job doesn't need to be so informal as being provided an income from a private group of nature lovers. Equestria regiments a great deal of the natural world, I wouldn't be surprised if she has a government job. After all she did run the bunny census. Also, Ponyville is next to the Everfree forest, maybe homes are cheap there?
Also, how does Twilight's grant money for studying friendship affect her finances? Could explain why she can afford a mad scientist basement. |
| CaravanPalace #1212674 3 months ago |
Damn, as far as fandom headcannons go, this is impressive. Props for the brony who took the time to actually conceptualize this.
To Ginger_Fig or whoever created the ground work for this: sit down and write a fanfic, you have the right imagination for world-building. |
| Ginger_Fig #1212681 3 months ago |
@Drasvin: Your theory about Fluttershy holding a government position is equally likely.
I'm conjecturing that Pinkie makes extra cash by organizing parties. The Cakes handle catering but Pinkie pulls together decorations, music, invitations and a thousand other details. People pay good money to have birthday parties, anniversaries & weddings professionally organized...why not ponies? Two weeks ago I would have agreed with you about Dash...she's way too young to be a supervisor. But during the whole water-tornado job she was clearly in a leadership role...reporting to no-pony. Obviously, she'd never get the job of local supervisor in a big city like Canterlot or Manehattan, but Ponyville is just a small town. As for her house...I'd imagine it takes a lot of expensive magic to hold a thing like that together. @Anon645: I hadn't considered Twilight's mad-scientist basement...but even if she can't afford such equipment herself she has sufficient clout in Canterlot (all the guards at the library seemed to know and respect her) to borrow the stuff. |

I don't always go gaga over fanon and all (or even read them at all some days), but this was a fascinating read. |
| Anonymous #1212809 3 months ago |
Fluttershy's makes me think of Dr. Dolittle. He explained in the 60s movie that a problem with being an animal doctor was that his patients didn't pay him with human currency, only with whatever goods/services they could afford. I wonder if Fluttershy's animal friends attempt to pay her the same way if they don't have owners.
Not that this would help her situation much. In the movie, Dolittle is seen or mentions being paid with dead fish, acorns, mice, grubs, and rides into down from the local plowhorse. |

Rainbow Dash is probably not as safe as you make her out to be. While her acknowledged skills got her a job in weather management, and even leadership assigmnents time to time, her horrible work attitude is also well known (her overconfidence drives her to laze off on the job, she takes more time time to practice aerial tricks than to pick up important weather management skills, she makes up excuses to skip out on indoor learning, plays rude pranks and ignores the needs of importnat clients etc.) She is also known to consider the position to be a temporary one until she makes her break out as a professional athlete. But THAT dream is still far off and Dash could easily find herself in a position of being forced to do low paying menial labout only to make ends meet.
Pinkie Pie on the other hand is faring a lot better than you show. While not a particularly responsible earner or spender she makes up for it by effective social networking. She'll be able to count on preferential treatment from a wide range of "friends" for new job offers, loans and lodging simply because she's "the" Pinkie Pie. This puts her in a much better standing than Rainbow Dash. Oh, and you forgot Twilight's student benefits that she receives from Celestia, which she has probably received her whole life without questioning them. I do not believe her parents are more than averagely well earning, but Twilight just doesn't understand why anyone'd have money problems, as she assumes that they receive the same generous benefits from their employers as she does. |

Twilight is a grad student working under a grant from the Equestrian Ministry of Magic and/or Defense while researching the weaponization of friendship. The library job is her cover and/or an obligatory work-study job. Her parents live in Canterlot so are above the Equestrian norm but don't strike me as uniquely well-off. Her parental support is probably nil, but her needs have been take care of by Celestia since she was enrolled in the magical school.
Fluttershy is an odd case. Is she independently wealthy, supported by an outside group or a government employee (specializing in animal welfare) ala Rainbow Dash? No clear answer. |
| ILSS #1213038 3 months ago |
Given that the ponies take care of the animals, I imagine that Fluttershy's just is probably, you know, taking care of the animals. |

@Vree:
Twilight is a unicorn with unicorn parents, and was born a Canterlot native. That implies upper middle class at the absolute minimum. And while it appears competitive private school admissions is more talent-based than income-based in Equestria, her parents weren't worried about paying for it. And then Celestia paid for her, so they didn't even have to shell that money out. Even minus investment growth of what they didn't pay, they're very well off. Rainbow Dash doesn't need to practice weather control, she can already clear the sky. In. Ten. Seconds. Flat. Moving clouds around for pranks isn't even work for her. Knowledge of her bad work habits certainly didn't prevent the Cloudsdale authorities from putting her in charge of the most important thing Ponyville can ever remember doing. And she did it. If she wasn't a tenured employee in whatever their General Schedule Merit Pay system equivalent is called before, she is now. Pinkie Pie will do OK, because she's talented (except not at can-can dancing and singing), has an eidetic memory and all sorts of obscure knowledge, and she has the energy to do most jobs. She had supervisory authority over breaking up the ice in Winter Wrap-Up. She can get a municipal job if she needs it, though probably not at Dash's level. Also, although she lived like a pauper in her youth, her family's rock farm was clean and well-maintained. They didn't lack money, they lacked frivolous spending. In our world, the Amish tend to be quite wealthy because they work hard, earn a lot, and spend little. A lot of Amish kids can buy a car in cash without their parents' help when it comes time to "sow the wild oats." Pinkie's doing OK, though she may have some trouble in later retirement, if she ever retires. Her energy will probably carry her as able to hold at least some sort of job if she needs to, until her last year or two of life. Even then, she still has her family down on the rock farm. She can go back to her sisters and their foals and grandfoals for free terminal care in her last days. |

You know, I would totally write a fanfic about the Mane6 and job hunting based around this if I believed anypony would actually read it. I like how MLP is sorta-educational and what better to educate people in this economical crisis than the ups and downs of finding employment. |

Also, aren't each of the Mane Six national heroes if they bother to throw that around? |

I doubt it. Ponies in Ponyville seem to have a very short memory as a society. Pretty much like our society. |

What a lot of people don't realize is that just like how the weather doesn't control itself in Ponyville, the shows implied that fauna that live there lack strong survival instincts and probably aren't capable of taking care of themselves. So if you look at it that way Fluttershy would probably be a "park ranger" of sorts and thus government contracted. |
