hrm. I'm not going to touch the use of the word "transgender", because it's particularly entangled with the messes of the real world, and because there's things going on there that we still don't understand enough to map safely and painlessly to a discussion of a fictional conceit like "shapeshifting". so instead, I'd just like to say that I doubt a shapeshifter would really be equally comfortable in any form, because even shapeshifters have to have a self-concept - have to have a way in which they think of who they are. and even if you have someone who's thrown away any notion of a permanent form, I think to a certain extent there will be things they like being and things they dislike being. if you have a shapeshifter with a trademark - something they tend to throw into their forms because it "fits" them, maybe even as superficial as a favorite color - it would feel less natural and more like a disguise if they were to take a form without that feature. and I think the same would be true of a shapeshifter who thinks of himself as male taking a female form. |
