The reason is that almost nopony even knows the official names of the toys.

Because people prefer fanon over canon, usually.

Example: Lyra rather than Heartstrings.

do YOU want to go through the entire database and tag every single Lyra picture as Lyra_Heartstrings?

I took the community a shorter amount of time to come up with fannon names than it did for Hasbro to name toys.

We were just used to it already.

Meanwhile, every once in a while I have the urge to retag all MTG tags as Magic:_the Gathering.

It's about what those characters are most referred to, and more widely known as. It's for searching purposes, not accuracy purposes I believe.

Should a character ever get a canon name in the show Eco could likely just let a program do all the retagging, or tag-adding.

Have fun tagging every Trixie image with "Lulamoon", then!

No, not really.
Simply because most people don't like the names Hasbro has given the background ponies we know.
If they had taken the advantage before the name, let's say "Lyra" was invented, then Heartstrings would be acceptable to the community because Hasbro came up with the name first.
But we (as the community) came up with the name first and just don't like seeing it switched with another name.

TL;DR Fanon>Canon in the works, as always. What did you expect, OP?

OP here. The thing is, some people seem to dislike having the toy names in images' tags at all, even if they're there alongside the fanon names' tags instead of replacing them.

If it wasn't for those people who remove the toy names' tags from images tagged with both names, it would be possible to gradually add the toy names' tags to all of those ponies' images, making the tags functionally identical.

Personally I give official toy names no merit. The only way names become official are if they are actually used on the show.

All it needs is to have tag aliases set up, then a search for either name returns the same results. It'd even clear up differently-tagged names where there is widespread agreement (e.g. at the moment "Derpy" returns different results to "Derpy_Hooves" - a tag alias would consolidate all images tagged with either of these without any need for re-tagging).

I agree. The official toy names are prettier, but people are clingy about their fan names. I think Faust doesn't mind the fan names, but even though she can use whatever names she wants in the show, she has to give the toys (which I am personally more into than the show) names that Hasbro has a copyright on, which is why one of the toy ponies' names is Lulamoon, when it is clearly Trixie. Still, I really don't like to use fanon names. They sound too short, generic, and just un-pony-ish.

It's mostly because the first wave of toy names were terrible, leading to the larger portion of the community rejecting them. They haven't gotten any better, with the toys pretty much just having some horrid second name tossed on alongside the original.

That's why nobody uses those names.

I tag all my pictures with both names for example I tag derpy with both "Ditzy_Doo" and "Derpy_Hooves" (That is of course untill Ditzy is proved to not be her at all.)

But yea, I'd tag Lyra as both "Lyra" and "Heartstrings" just so it would always be found if you were searching for her.

This is me, Anonymous from the post above ILSS. I just joined.

Her name isn't Derpy Hooves or Ditzy Doo. It's just Derpy.

As much as I'd like Lyra's name to be Heartstrings, as it sounds so much prettier, more graceful, and even a bit grimdark, it seems that Faust has given in to calling her Lyra by adding the name to the card while still keeping Heartstrings to get away with copyrights.

I refuse to call Golden Harvest by the name of that bisexual comedian.

I predict BonBon will be called Triple Treat. It sounds just as shoddy as BonBon, but there won't be any copyright problems since it's the name of a previous pony.

Um, didn't they correct the names of Lyra and Trixie in the last wave? they named them Lyra heartstrings and Trixie Lulamoon, didn't they?

...I could've sworn they did...

I'd love to just use an alias system (that way you wouldn't have to worry about somepony using the wrong tag; you could just add common misspells to the alias and it'd populate them correctly. But I don't know if that can actually be done on Ponibooru. #1193916 if you know more please elaborate.

There was a disagreement over whether toy names are the same as show canon, and Ponibooru fell on the side where we wouldn't treat them the same as canon. Now that there have been examples like Blossomforth (toy named adopted by show) or Trixie Lulamoon (toy name merging show name and previous toy name) and Lyra Hearstrings (fanon(!) name merged with toy name) or Cherry Berry (toy name that part coincides with fan name) there could be a consensus for some of the names. But it's still safer and easier to just add all the tags.

@SunriseInferno: You're entitled to your opinions, but as for "pretty, graceful, and grimdark," do you mean this pony:

Tagging for all names is tedious and clutters the tags. With a few exceptions, there is a general consensus on most pony names, and we should use the most commonly used names for tags.

^^

Although I watch the show, I tend to give my toys their own personalities. For example, my Fluttershy seems more like she was when she was possessed by Discord, while my Cheerilee acts more like the canon Fluttershy. My Twilight Sparkle is an evil male necromancer, and my Rarity, also male, is a Hitler parody. My AppleJack is Honeybuzz's brother. Both my AppleJack and my Honeybuzz are male Mongolian wild horses. My Rainbow Dash has dreadlocks and a Scottish accent and pronounces the letter T as an apostrophe. My Pinkie Pie is similar to the one on the show but obsessed with science fiction. I treat my ponies as the descendents/reincarnations of the cannon ponies. I really can't say how my Blossomforth differs from the cannon one since she doesn't have any lines on the show since she hasn't had any lines on the show yet, but my Blossomforth toy, being one that I don't play with as much, has more of a flat personality. She has sort of a Japanese feel to her since she's got that geisha white fur color, but she also has a bit of a British accent.

If I was good with stop motion and could think up plotlines and MLP wasn't already popular, I bet my ponies with their random personalities would be very popular on YouTube.

Bonbon was a character from mlp tales a chef who wanted to be a model and always carried her diary, she was sort of selfish but lovable all the same (I could go on but it isn't important)

OP here again. Tag aliases would indeed be the best solution, but I had kind of given up on that ever happening (there are other tag aliases that Ponibooru needs, such as having "prince_blueblood" become "blueblood" like "princess_celestia" becomes "celestia" and "princess_luna" becomes "luna").
