"Niece" could refer to the daughter of a ludicrously close friend of Celestia, or a little filly she raised alongside Twilight, despite Twilight not knowing. |

I like to think that Alicorns are born to normal families and Celestia swoops in and proclaims adoption of the new born foal, then she pays the parents exceedingly large amounts of money to have them proclaim it a miscarriage. She then tell tells Equestria about her new niece/nephew and raises them with those thoughts. |
