I was actually surprised at how much I liked Katniss's actress. I thought they'd give her some drop-dead gorgeous girl, but while the actual actress isn't ugly, she's very "normal". It made the action scenes much more believable, I think. |

^There was a page a few days back that advertised such a thing... it was a greasemonkey script and I believe it should work with Chrome or with Firefox. Unfortunately, as I had no desire to use it, I didn't save the page or anything.

I'm not saying that we should become a bunch of strict, hardline mods like they've got at ponygoons. Hell, I'm even cool with saying things like "I don't like Fluttershy being sepicted as Muslim because of x, y, z". There doesn't seem to be mods about, and the ones I have seen when I do are some of the worst most disrespectful mods I have ever met. I am sure there are some good mods here, but I've never seen them. As for offensive stuff and filters. It's a broken system seriously. Some people don't tag things that should be tagged so the filters don't work. Even with every filter on you still have a chance of seeing some pretty vile stuff. I have found that the best solution is simply to search for specific pictures, as it cuts down on the possibility of seeing things you never want to see. |

the policy up to now has been: users who are categorically rude can be banned. users who post off-topic stuff can have their images removed and be banned if they're habitual. users who post illegal material can be banned and their images removed, and are whenever I know it's happened. users who post stuff without mandatory tags get small bans (larger for habitual offenders). everything else is fair game, and comments don't get deleted because one time some banned user made a stink about how I'd deleted the comments that proved their innocence.
that said, I am given to understand that this approach is changing. the general conduct rule is starting to getting enforced more than it used to be, and actual comment cleanup is on the table now. this is because the mods have asked me for some discretion in dealing with the current signal-to-noise ratio, which I'm willing to give because I never wanted to deal with the mod job in the first place and this means I can continue to focus on admin-type stuff. technical stuff, like keeping the server running, dealing with lag spikes, and adding the occasional new feature. |

^there needs to be a more effective way for users to self-police though. The "why is she" guy must've been here for weeks and scared good artists off. Even if mod action is eventually taken, the image threads move fast enough that it remains unnoticed because everyone's already left the threads. And thus a lot of people become convinced that the Ponibooru userbase is just trolls in general. During troll attacks, whatcha gonna do?
I think since the staff is clearly not big enough to deal with all of it (and less work is better is a general rule anyway) I'd say that the users need to be given a clear course of action to report or downvote or tag or PM when it happens. I know there is a way to report or downvote an image (though considering how rarely mods are seen most users probably don't expect it to have any result anyway), but there isn't anything similar for comments or for user accounts. Really "PM Eco and hope he takes note" was the best thing I could suggest to anyone with a problem. I'm not that bothered myself and most Ponibooru users have thick skins. But we do lose users and artists sometimes when it gets bad and we're not getting those guys back. I'm not suggesting any of my friends to come to Ponibooru either even though most guys are really nice here, because of how facepalm-y the site can get, due to lack of moderation. |

the recommended approach for comments is to report the image where the problematic comment was made, and explain in the report reason that you're reporting it to draw our attention to those comments.
and yes, while we have recently expanded the modteam, it's still small for a site of this size. I'm not really sure what the solution to that is, given that I'm reluctant to hand over the keys of the kingdom to anyone in whom I don't have personal confidence. |
