It's not that bums themselves are important parts of the society, it's that the presence of a free market in which there can be risk to maximize potential is important. With the potential of great wealth comes the potential to lose it, which is why the rich often do not see themselves as rich and try to become richer. Because of this, those well-off must do their best to take care of those who have not been as fortunate/blessed/savvy, so it is important to help bums.

Also, inb4 An Album Cover.

I think it's sad that some people live on the streets and deserve sympathy/help if that's what you mean.

(A very large number of the homeless population are mentally ill and will never be able to "suck it up and get a job.")

Speaking of literature... I received an Omnibus of Dickens for my birthday earlier in the month and have been reading through it again. It's funny because many of the lines spoken by the harsh workhouse owners and parochial leaders in that book actually seem like today's Republican platform.

It took on a new humor/sadness.

I feel for them, they've been cast off due to the recession, or due to bad family situations that either they or someone else started, and no forgiveness could be spared.

I've talked with a few of them until they were taken to another town that has a "revolving door shelter" They stay there for 30-45 days, to clean up and find any job and a room for rent. If they can't find anything, they get kicked out for two months.

One of them, I remember, since he was so friendly, I tried to bring him back, but he said they kindly put out a notice for him to vacate in perpetuity. Some kinda letter that said "get lost forever" in lotsa nice words. So, we went to find some public campgrounds, where he was floating around there for two or so years. There was an opening for a guide, and he fit, since he knows the place well enough. He thanked me for the help, finding that campground for him.
