Because up until Sisterhooves Social, we had absolutely no evidence that Rarity WASN'T Sweetie Belle's mom outside of their own words.
Combine that with the fact that it was assumed Sweetie Belle was living at Carousel Boutique and you can see why some drew other conclusions. Since that episode, this argument quickly faded away. |

because we didn't see their parents until season 2, and on the meantime the fandom, being a fandom... well simply decided that they were either dead or that rarity was the mother |

I would assume that it was an inside joke among the community. Of course then the pony artists rolled with it and we got some good laughs. I would also like to point out that one such artist is Terry (Tyrranux). |

Same way the 'Applejack is Applebloom's mom' thing started: Without actually seeing their parents some people thought, 'hey, wouldn't it be an interesting turn if the older sister was actually her mother but couldn't let them know?'
To each there own I suppose. Being a mother didn't seem to affect Twilight's appeal in any case. |

^^^ There were some comics about Rarity having an unwanted pregnancy that resulted in Sweetie Belle, and that Rarity treated her like trash, making her sleep in the boiler room and hiding her existence from everyone. That was a longass time ago, like last July or so.
