I always took AJ for a republican.
But I can't argue with an endorsement like that. |

Bearing in mind that the ponies' actual political party is "Royalist"*, let's assume they have the standard political axes in Equestria -- Authoritarian/Libertarian, Left/Right -- when it comes to elections for the local offices like mayor. Here's my guesses:
Twilight Sparkle: Growing up in the academic culture and close to the Princess, Twilight is likely to be a standard strong-government progressive, the local equivalent of the mainstream American left. Rarity: She has distinct class notions and ambitions, suggesting a somewhat authoritarian outlook. As a small business owner, she may be slightly economically conservative. I could see her thinking that the government should be as generous as she was, or thinking that private charity could handle any such needs. Let's categorize her as the Equestrian equivalent of economic-issues Republican. Applejack: Her episodes show her to be culturally traditional, without any particular authoritarian or libertarian bent; I would peg her as the equivalent of a social-issues Republican. However, a party of populist economics that appeals to farmers could have a chance at her vote. Pinkie Pie: Highly open to new experiences and not likely to respond well to strict control, Pinkie is definitely left/libertarian, practically anarchist. Fluttershy: Fluttershy is probably not much of an active voter, not tending to identify with a large group. A party could seek her votes based on environmental concerns, or on security. Since her innate kindness seems likely to lead to support for a strong social safety net, while security-oriented slogans would more frighten her than attract her, I would hazard that she tends to vote left. Rainbow Dash: the novelty-seeking, freedom-in-the-skies Dash probably joins Pinkie Pie on the near-radical left. Being the element of Loyalty probably restrains these tendencies somewhat, making her a reliable liberal voter Underneath the monarchic structure and any established church that might go with it, I strongly suspect that the positions I describe here are arrayed around a political center much closer to the European center than the American. Ponyville's big public-participation projects, like Winter Wrap-Up and storm preparations, suggest that the government has a claim on citizens' labor under at least some circumstances. It may be considered a part of taxation. Certainly a politics built around the values of kindness and generosity are likely to skew substantially socialist compared to American standards. (A cynic might suggest that a politics built around honesty would be utterly alien to humanity in general.) * I'm working for a two-year stint in a European country with a standard parliamentary democracy. My officemate, however, is royalist. Wants to restore the monarchy and everything. I can't even figure out how this works. |
