As long as they retain their personalities, and give respect to the characters, I think it'll be okay.

..........man, I couldn't even type that with a straight face. I'm sorry guys.

Yeah, because the mutant part, that was totally what was important. Totally. That whole teenage ninja turtles thing, that wasn't important to the characters, its that they're mutant people really care about.

Hollywood. Stop giving Michael Bay beloved 80s franchises to destroy in films. I can't even begin to comprehend the fan backlash Bay will get for this.

Can we start lobbying to get him removed from production. Or to at least make sure that this impending giant turd of a movie never sees the light of day.

And Hasbro. Just...please, if you have a shred of dignity left, don't let Bay direct a FiM movie.

@482 He's going against a constant aspect of the franchise canon. Even those who have never seen or read TMNT know what their origin is.
HOW ARE THE CREATORS LETTING BAY DO THIS?!

At least they'll stick to what their personalities are, hopefully.
Unlike those fucking teen movies where they made Little Red Riding Hood into a retarded romance mystery story, and Snow White into an action battle starring the most emotionally challenged actor to come around since Nicolas Cage.

And you are aware the original TMNT comic was satirical, and was making fun of the X-Men, right? Even back then they thought the origin was stupid.

Yup. Nothing's important until enough people make a fuss about it. That's pretty much the size of it.

I like the Turtles, but I never caught on to the craze as a kid, so they don't really hold that much nostalgic value for me. The second NES game was great, in any case.

@Dudemang: No, something like a dumb origin (and yes, it is dumb. Weird goo being splashed on animals making them turn human is something I expect out of a furry porno, not a goddamn origin story) is not sacred just cause people liked the original thing.

When is an origin story not dumb and contrived?

In this case, making the turtles turn out to be aliens is probably just too much of a contrast for old-school fans to accept.

And it's honestly really just hard to make into an interesting backstory, because saying "they're aliens" basically comes loaded with a tired mystique, thinned clichés and worn tropes that have been explored for years in fictional mediums.

Not to mention it was basically the death knell of the Highlander series - a series that, from what I can tell, only had one good entry, and that was the original movie.

And your mentioning of that just of course alleviates the natural conflict that comes with the arbitrary things people like and dislike.

Some people like it. You obviously don't. I don't care one way or the other.

@Dude: Oh, the fans weren't gonna accept it anyway. They'da bitched if they didn't get the original actors from the Live action movies to do it. Including Vanilla Ice.

Yeah, most origin stories are stupid anyway, but Aliens still gives you more ways to make things interesting that "mutants". Go into the history of their culture, their lives back on their planet, why they feel used having to save a planet they don't care about. With the original origin, its just "okay, now they're full grown and have cogniticve minds. Who's for pizza?"

Yeah, but Highlander still sucked even after they took the aliens back out. Highlander just sucks when you try and make a sequel to it.

You're not alone. I enjoyed the first one quite a bit. And the third one had some nice cinematography and top notch CGI. The technical staff that designed the robots should be lauded to no end. The writers however should be banned from all forms of storytelling permanently

Saban (of Power Rangers fame) made a TMNT Saturday morning live action series, so naturally, they created a bunch of rather odd villains. This could be one of them.
Wheezie_Moonflower

Talkin' about HeroInferno's pic. I think by the time this guy came out, kids lost interest in the franchise. The original cartoon had few villains, but ,oh, they had real CHARACTER!

As for the post, Bay's totally missing the point. I don't think changing the storyline in that direction will help at all.

If that happens, might as well change the story about Battletoads, then.

See to me the change in origin isn't what's worrying it's the reasoning behind it. The only real reason I can think of to change to this is that it's "more logical/realistic" then mutant producing slime. THAT line of thought is what sets off alarm bells, as while a dumb origin can be glossed over a profoundly ill advised tone and poor direction can't be.

My fear is that this is the first step in an attempt to make the concept "more serious". This is a BAD idea with something as inherently ridiculous as TMNT. This it a franchise that needs maximum camp and liberal amounts of self awareness to work in the modern age. Trying to make this like fucking Ninja Gaidan with turtle men will be a fucking disaster..
