I'm no Russophile, but the T-34 saved Europe's ass. No "inferior Russian design" there. The Panzer I, II, and III couldn't hold a candle to it during Barbarossa. Really, all modern tank designs come from the T-34 - so who's stealing from who?
The performance of Russian designed tanks in the Yom Kippur War had more to do with the superior targeting and jamming systems of the Israelis than the allegedly poor construction of the Soviet made tanks. Not to mention the Israeli's superior training. Having said that, I do consider the Centurion to be the best tank of that war. |

Okay. First, Anon 56299. Stank already told you why the Israel destroyed arabian armies. Arabs indeed had soviet armor, BUT they haven't soviet tankers (the guys who drive tanks, who must learn A LOT about using their armor before go to battlefield). I assume that Syria and Egypt had, lets say, not the best tankers they could get. Not only tankers, mind you, but also jet pilots and other military staff. As far as I know, arabs had much more men AND armor\jets in that war, yet they lost. Why? Heck, if only I was there back then so I could tell you the answer. But, as wiki (and Stank) says - quality won over quantity. That's the first thing. The second thing - Israelis had and still has far superiour trainings, and thus the Israel still exist. Did Sirians and Egyptians have as good training as Israelis? I honestly don't know myself, but I think we both can guess the answer. Seriously, it was about 1 against 2.5 man back there. And losses were awful on both sides. Now Stank, I honestly don't know about "all modern tank designs come from the T-34", but humanity always took and still takes good ideas from each other, so your words are likely true. Oh, and please anons - don't start your "the commies always steal our neat tech because they can't build shit without it!". You guys do realise that industrial espionage wasn't think up by russians at the beginning of 20th century, do you? The various Arab armies are horrid at modern conventional war. Syrian and Egyptian officers constantly frustrated both their Soviet and (in the case of Egypt post-1975) American trainers by their pigheadedness and refusal to work together in a manner that would effectively work on the modern battlefield. Most notably the Iraqis were stalemated by the Iranians for years, despite the former having overwhelming superiority in armor and artillery, while an entire Libyan mechanized corps was once routed by a force of Chad guerrillas in technicals (ie: civilian pick-up trucks with heavy weapons strapped to them) that was outnumbered 3:1! And the less said about the attitude of those in the Saudi military, the better. By all acounts, the only Arab army which is remotely decent in terms of troop quality was the Jordanian Army...
Soviet equipment which was sent to their client states also suffered from the Soviet practice of creating special export models of their tanks, often referred to derisively as "Monkey Models" (so called because they often recieved the 'M' designation, for example: the T-55M, which is rather ubiquitous among Arab armies). Now it is a rather common practice among major arms exporter to downgrade the stuff they hand over to their clients in some manner. The M1A2s the United States sold to Saudi Arabia, for instance, has a downgraded fire control systems the M1A2s used by the US Army does. The thing is, the Soviets took it a step further... For comparison, lets take the Soviet workhorse of the 1970s: the T-72. The model that was commonly used among the Red Army for the time was the T-72A, which had a 125mm 2A46M main gun and an average of roughly 600mm of frontal armor. On the other hand, the T-72M commonly found among the Arab armies and other Soviet export states was armed with the older 2A26 gun and had an average of roughly 300mm of frontal armor! It was actually a rather brilliant move on the Soviets part, since the West would look at the equipment they destroyed fighting Soviet proxies and assume that was the same kind of equipment they would face if they fought the Soviets in Central Europe... which was actually a radical underestimation! One final note: the T-72, like the T-55 and T-62, was a Soviet "quantity tank"... a design primarily optimized for mass production and to "fill the ranks" (so to speak) while still remaining capable combatants. The two Soviet "quality tanks", the T-64 and T-80, were never exported outside the Soviet Union... |
