People think that because Spike followed his moral compass and stuck true to his roots, he is a doormat that can't stand up for himself. So he should have smashed that egg to gain acceptance with a group of people that needed stunts like that to gain their friendship?

People who say it was the worst episode are just saying that because they don't like Merriweather Williams. Now after a few episodes I still think she needs to get a slightly better grasp of the characters and tend to overwrite them kinda like she did with Rarity. But it wasn't the WORST episode ever.

Don't mind them, fellow anon. They just are...they're just a chan...

As for NTR or Netorare, well... I'll just refer to TvTropes.

"Netorare is essentially a genre whose goal is to project discomfort on the audience's part (much like horror flicks are intended to provoke unintended bowel movements), where the discomfort comes in the form of sexual jealousy. Typically, a heroine will be introduced as having a significant other, which may be a husband, a boyfriend, or even a partner... The story will then show the aforementioned heroine being intimate with another man (another girl just doesn't pack the same punch), thus provoking jealousy in the audience by proxy. The nature of the affair varies, and the parties involved may be willing or unwilling."

And there you have it.

In answer to your questions, I think everyone else pretty much covered everything.
If you're confused about what "beta male" means, though, it's basically a rung lower than "alpha-male" and is seen as the "Foreveralone and/or Okay.jpg" kind of guy. Pretty much a doormat.

This episode was fucking rad, top 10 of the whole season. People who claim it's the worst are fucked up, yo.

Maybe it's because I don't take the show so seriously and try to enjoy it mostly for A. comedic moments and good jokes (Crackle is my favorite moment in the entire series so far) and B. super rad animation. Once I had time to think it over and found a few reasonable responses towards it from others, I thought the way Rarity acted towards Spike made sense and totally worked. As for any any signs of feminism or the whole "beta male" aspect with Spike, I'm just not educated enough to know or care about any of that stuff. I'm totally ignorant regarding these issues/subjects and I intend on staying that way. ESPECIALLY concerning this show, seeing how it's still a children's show despite the wide appeal it has. I try not to think hard about most things in the first place, and I'm certainly not going to start thinking any harder over a show who's target audience is little girls, despite it being far more intelligent, well-written and made than most other children's shows out there today.

this post sucks and so does anybody who's (apparently) getting really pissy about this episode. fuck you and fuck me too.

ps: merriweather wiiliams has DEFINITELY improved and i look forward to future episodes written by her.

I cant answer the feminism question for you as I dont really get that complaint either, but the racism from this episode comes from this: Every dragon with the exception of spike has been shown to be rude at best (the red dragon from dragonshy) to maliosus at worst (the green dragon form "owls well that ends well" . With this being the first episode focusing on dragons as a whole the writers had a chance to show that not all dragons are the scary evil hellbeast the ponies made them out to be. For some reason the writers not only to keep up with the stereotypes, but to exaggerate them. For example what if the "bridle gossip" episode ended with Zecora actually trying to eat Apple Bloom instead of showing that she wasn't evil.

Forgive my Tvtropeyness, but I view the dragons as a "Planet of hats/always chaotically evil" kind of thing. Like Orcs or Trolls, they are just a giant race of one single hat. Spike is the "defector from decadence" and follows his moral compass rather then fall into the sea of hats.

I can respect that, it still bugs me how much build up they gave us for nothing. They set the story up like we were going to uncover some of the mystery behind the dragon race, and the only thing we learned is that teenage dragons are just as dickish as adult ones, a reveal I don't believe warranted this level of build up. They could of thrown us a bone and told us something about them, anything really.

I noticed something. These dragons were fine sharing their gems among them, even to spike. And they didnt seem too mindless, like spike.

So i believe that either:

These dragons are under controlled hoarding
or
They matured naturally so they are more civilized than spike when he had his greed drive.
Zincy
#1153995

3952, a "Planet of Hats" is when an entire race demonstrates the same basic character trait. "Always Chaotically evil" is when said character trait is something evil or nasty. "Defector from Decadence" is when a character of a faction or race thats evil or bad decide to follow their own moral compass rather then the crowd.
some_zigga
#1154034

@Zincy
See Im not a big fan of that trope, expesslily for a kids show. Spike is part of the main cast and his race has been shown thus far to be just as sentient as the rest of the sentient creatures. This may be a bit personal but as a black man, I've had to constantly deal with condescending white people telling me about how i'm "different" from other black people because i'm educated and don't speak with an urban dialect. I'm most likely overeating to this, but I don't think the lesson that the only way for spike to be a good person is to reject his race's culture in favor of the ponies "right" one is a good moral to teach to kids.
Zincy
#1154052
Well, technically since they no longer carry an E.I. rating, they don't have to teach kids any moral or Aesop and can focus on straight entertainment. So they don't actually have to have a moral. That being said, I still stand by my theory that the dragons were being used as a sort of "moral foil" for Spike. Its just a rule of thumb in fantasy, you'll always have that one asshole race.

@1153876: If I understood: many were disappointed because many see the discrimination against dragons due to those seen in the episode? Who is the most racist: the one who don't like [insert names here] because they act as jerks or the one says it's racist for a dragon to be jerk? Okay, with the exception of Spike, we have not seen a dragon which is nice so far, but still it does not mean that does not exist. The interpretation that these people are doing seems to be that if one does something, all of which are from the same characteristic as the one are in the same boat and must pay the price, but no recoil to say it before any individual issue, not race. Probably they wanted the episode is about the dragons (or at least have the theme of dragons), but at first glance the episode before on Spike with the theme "Who am I VS. what I am".

In short: they want wine while it is water.

What? Reject his culture? Those dragons were just teenage assholes, not ambassadors of Draconic culture.
If you didn't want to help a group of black guys rob a bank, would you consider that "against your culture?" No that would be against your own morals.

I like that trope for this situation. I really got the feel for the dragon mentality of being simply: "Do I want to eat you, and am I able to eat you?"
Spike being raised by ponies (and Twilight, no less) pretty much broke this, though it started to present itself again when he got greedy (although instead of "eat" it was "take". But it quickly could have turned to eat, had he continued being a 'greedy monster')
