It's not a migration; parents are just abandoning their jerkass kids.

Or you know, male teenage dragons are just like a lot of teenage boys...

@NightJack
The thing is that even in Secret of My Excess when Spike turned adult he didn't have any wings.

I don't know, most kids I knew at that age were pretty mellow. Could just be me though.

@vino
And what does having wings have to do with behavior?

@NightJack
Might be a different kind of Dragon.
Winged dragons: Jerks
Wingless dragons: Nice guys.

I don't know. Just something I thought about.

^ OK, but like I said, it could be a thing for all dragons, wings or not, so back to what I said the first time...

Well, in Secret of my Excess Spike grew out of control because his hoarding instinct went crazy. I guess suppressing his instincts for so long had crazy consequences. He may still get his wings yet, nothing about that transformation seemed natural.

Even as an adult, Spike didn't have wings...I never realized it until the teens mentioned it at which point my mind was blown. I think that not having wings is an intentional trait that means something we don't yet know.

I think that the way a dragon grows up depends on many psychological factors, and not simply if the dragon is greedy or not. The adult Spike shown in Secret of my Excess was just one of the many possible ways in which Spike can grow up.

^So... I have to use a Fire Stone with Maximum Happiness to get ChariSpike?

This is one more reason I think they should have done research in Canterlot instead of heading off after the dragons. He can't even be sure those were the right kind of dragon. Maybe the wingless ones hibernate somewhere instead.

My headcannon is pretty similar to pvr's; greed only activates adult growth. Other negative character traits likely activate other dragon traits, like horns. Sloth and/or gluttony might activate fire breath.
Positive character traits might result in a different growth direction, possibly even allowing spike to eventually achieve his dream dragon knight form.

Dunno... Canterlotians strike me as the snubby academics that would avoid field work even if it wasn't dangerous as fuck.

HOW ABOUT...we just assume he's a normal dragon and he'll grow wings eventually unless proven otherwise later.

Because he's already grown during that whole Greed episode and didn't have any wings at all. So there isn't any reason to assume that he's the same breed of dragon as the others.
Obviously there are variances within dragons that can even include extra limbs, just look at crackle, who has 8 legs, while the other dragons only have the standard 4. There's no reason to believe ALL dragons HAVE to have wings.
It's actually far more likely that the other dragons simply assume all dragons have wings because the only dragons that go on that migration are winged dragons. Hence all dragons that a teenager's limited experience has seen are with wings, and they assume they know everything from that limited experience.
To sum up, there's no reason AT ALL to assume that a bunch of jackass teenage dragons who have formed a frat style gang would know jack shit about actual signs of maturity.

^ Except that upon spotting his wingless back, the teen dragons assumed he was freshly hatched and had been "carried on [his momma's] back" for the whole migration. That seems to imply younglings don't have wings and must be carried by winged adults. Otherwise, they would have called him weird much like they did upon seeing "Crackle's cousin".
