From the artist:
The other pony here is Inner Strength, an ossaphobe; someone who fears bones, in his case particularly the ones inside him. He hates the way they feel and his obsession has kept him as a blank flank this long. DR X-RAY'S CHEST: This is FOLLOWING the original pic and I decided that rather than a cool scar or open wound Dr X-Ray filled in the hole with a flat gemstone. Looking carefully in the right light allows him to still see his ribcage, like a little window. The obvious bonus of this is that he's a MLP and a gem in an animal's chest is something that some girly toys do have. Went with "horse skull in a square" as Dr X-Ray's cutie mark. Here's the story: Panel 1: "So how can I help... You..." Dr X-Ray meets Inner Strength whilst on clinic duty. The pegasus pony has scratched and chipped hooves, one of which he seems to have tried to amputate leaving it swollen and infected. One wing is completely destroyed and, despite having no teeth (ow), Inner Strength is busy making progress with tearing out the other wing's bones. As he loves skeletons Dr X-Ray finds Inner Strength's hate quite personally offensive, but manages to stay calm and tries to talk Inner Strength into therapy. Eventually the conversation goes Inner's way once he promises X-Ray can have his bones after their removal. Panel 2: "...They're gone! You actually did it!" Wing and infected limb treated and bandaged the skeleton-removal surgery starts on the right foreleg (radius and below). The operation is a complete success and Inner Strength is thrilled. [Note: I've decided pony surgery takes place on specially indented tables with the patient laying on his/her side. His left hind leg's moved out from the indentation and the right's covering it a bit but it's there too.] Following this it turns out that Inner Strength is a much more balanced and friendly individual when taken seriously, especially towards the doctor who managed to arrange for the surgery to be done. Since he's also getting a new skeleton out of it Dr X-Ray starts to find Inner Strength easier to put up with. Panel 3: Surgery complete Taking place not long after the final surgery Inner Strength finally feels at home around his skeleton (after its complete removal). He is on a course of having various implants to keep his system running (e.g. the chest dome) and more are planned. At the moment he has a temporary wire cube keeping his head from collapsing and is kept mobile by little hover pads (like Tank the tortoise has). Most of Inner Strength's skull-removal scars are on the back of his head. He and Dr X-Ray have now become friends and, along with the almost entirely wingless skeleton (only 1 bone remains, the others were too mangled), they kind of make an Earth-Unicorn-Pegasus pony trio. They are going for a walk (Dr X-Ray wuvs his second skeleton) and everything is lovely. YAY FRIENDSHIP! I can only imagine that, if lucky, Inner Strength will go on to become some sort of cyborg. =p His name kinda suits it. |
