I'd imagine Fluttershy's father would be assertive and kind, and her mother would be soft-spoken and very nurturing. Although, it'd be interesting if Fluttershy's mother were the more assertive one.
With Rainbow Dash, I'm thinking her parents would be the 'jock' type. Both of them coming from a long line of accomplished ponies. But they're very demanding of Rainbow Dash, wanting her to make the family proud. But she can't stand the constant 'you gotta be this'/'you gotta be that' talk from her parents, so she lives by herself to get away from it. |

I'd imagine that Fluttershy's parents are very tough on her. They probably have some history in the flight academy and pushed her into it. Probably very disappointed in in her landlubbing ways. Would make a great episode about accepting each other's flaws.
Rainbow Dash's parents are probably the opposite, very relaxed with no real expectations for her. They give her a very long leash and are very forgiving, but what they really want is for their daughter to come home. This episode could be about family values, and it could be pretty moving if Rainbow Dash actually does go home for a few episodes. The episode where/if Scootaloo's parents appear would be the one where Scootaloo finally earns her wings. They'll prove to be very supportive and soft on her, acknowledging her desire to learn to fly. And her parents really love her too. This one would be good for a lesson on perseverance. |

Rainbow Dash is a military brat. One of her parents is probably a retired Wonderbolt. She got sent to flight school to teach her some discipline. It didn't work.
Fluttershy's parents are either dead or horrifically abusive and no longer a part of her life. You aren't just born as meek and introverted as she is. Sorry to say, but Fluttershy reminds me of a friend of mine who was viciously beaten by her father as a child. Granted, the girl finally cracked and is now one of the meanest toughest bitches I know. |

Fluttershy’s Parents are quite loud and boast COME AND LOOK AT MY BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER! SHE IS SO KIND AND GRACEFUL AND SWEET! They try to show her off to their extremely wealthy friends and try to set her up with the other rich Pegasi. And Scootaloo? Well, She’s an Orphan unfortunately, but a kindly old Mare took her in. |

Rainbow Dash's parents are actually intellectuals; Dad's a philosopher and Mom invented the current method for creating rainbows. As a very young filly, Rainbow Dash was relentlessly tormented for having ridiculously nerdy egghead parents, and resolved to become nothing like them. So instead of a formal education, she demanded to be enrolled in flight school. Being pansies, her parents agreed, if not reluctantly. However, her upbringing left its mark. The moment she starts reading, she absolutely loves it. And Rainbow Dash is, surprisingly enough, incredibly smart, with an IQ even higher than Twilight's. She just never puts it to use, since she never had a proper education (her fault). Fluttershy grew up in an abusive household. Mother was a drunk and dad was an wife-beater and a child abuser (she will merely refer to him as "a very bad pony"). Dad got caught by the inspector beating his daughter and got thrown in jail, and Fluttershy was left with her salt lick-loving mother. Having been left hollow by her husband, Mrs. Shy is completely apathetic and doesn't give two shits about Fluttershy. The next few years are absolutely miserable, with Fluttershy working odd jobs around Cloudsdale to support her and her mother who is a worthless sack of shit. Mind you, Fluttershy is still just a filly. Eventually it gets too much for her and the by now very meek and pathetic leggy filly steals a few hundred bits from her mom and enrolls in flight school. The rest is yadda yadda yadda and she eventually falls from the sky, and life becomes sunshine and rainbows. Understandably, she doesn't give a flying fuck about her family. |

Pegasi don't form traditional families like unicorns and earth ponies; the children are raised collectively by the community, and each adult is considered just as much of a parent as the biological mother and father.
OR! Rainbow Dash is like Pound Cake: A pegasus born to a pair of Earth Ponies. Her father was a construction foreman (tying into her eventual job in weather management), and her mother was a fashion icon much like Rarity only much more gushy and openly excited about it (essentially an expy of G3 Rainbow Dash). RD was allowed to go to flight school when they finally admitted that as Earth Ponies, they couldn't give her what she really needed as a pegasus, but Rainbow still loves her parents all the same. Fluttershy comes from a long line of aggresive military pegasi, directly descended from Commander Hurricane. Her father is a retired Imperial Guard, and her mother is an armorsmith. As such high-ranking societal figures, Fluttershy grew up always attending loud, crowded conferences and such functions full of other rough-and-tumble ponies, and was scared into shyness as result of witnessing a training accident one day in which two cadets each had to have a wing amputated. Her father insisted she be shipped off the flight school to toughen her up, but it only served to make her even more introverted; she was eventually kicked out when she didn't come back after falling to the ground after starting a race one sunny afternoon... |
