We will just have to wait and see where Slugbox takes this. I'm pretty sure he will not do anything like that. As far as that murder is concerned, "Cteno" is dead. I use quotes because that's her new name. Her old name is not known. So she could sit next to him and he wouldn't even know... Heck, I don't think she even cares to go after him. In a way, he made her life better. The only good thing he did to her. |

of course Slugbox will never do that, but he said "Cteno never ever interact with any official characters from My Little Pony, AT LEAST FROM MY OWN HAND", i suppose that means he has no problem if another artist (or writer) uses Cteno and judging for all that R34, he really has no problem. |

to me, when you're trying to do something serious with an oc in an established setting, "doesn't obey the rules of the setting" is basically the #1 thing to avoid.
and cteno is definitely a "weird thing" from way off the map of equestria as we know it. on the other hand, to the extent that this character has been used for anything, it seems to be mostly for levity rather than serious business. so the fact that it is a "weird thing" for the author to mess around with... doesn't really matter that much. at least, I feel that way: that the character is not, as of now, in the kind of serious story where its exceptionality becomes offensive, because the character is not interacting with the setting it defies in a meaningful way. |

to me the term has a really specific definition: the kind of character who rumbles into a setting, fitting in poorly, and making everything about her as she goes. there are a lot of no-nos that are warning signs, and that often come along with that template. an overdesigned character, for instance, or one with an unrealistically tragic backstory, or having no practical flaws (i.e. no flaws that actually cause failure or trouble from time to time). most of the time these are artifacts of lazy or clumsy character design, and to be avoided unless the designer has sufficient craft to know what they're doing. but as far as qualifying as a "mary sue" (by my understanding of the term), these are all just annoyingly common contributions to: 1) the character's awkward fit into the world around her, and 2) the character's rapid apotheosis to the center of attention, even for characters and setting elements which should have no reason to care. so there are OP characters or "special snowflake" characters who are not mary sues, and mary sues who are not "special snowflakes" or OP (although those can contribute). just my two bits, as it were. |
