Bringing up Tartarus is hopefully some kind of foreshadowing. Hopefully. |

Hell, I'll check it out. |

@Imdumb If nothing else it gives fanfic writers somewhere to pull all sorts of horrors from. |

In ancient greek myths, Cerberus was fairly friendly to outsider: It was when you tried to LEAVE hades that he got unpleasant. Even then, heroes consistently got past him by giving him a honey cake. In spite of his one, single, clear weakness, he managed to keep the dead in their just fine, for the most part.
We've just substituted honey cakes for a ball here. Nothing to worry about... right? (Cue season 3 is about monsters escaping from tartarus) |

Tagged "plot hole"? That's not a plot hole. Look the word up.
Also, I like how Twilight is just like "Well, gotta go to the deepest regions of Hades and bring Tartarus back his three-headed monster dog. No problem, I'll be back tomorrow." |

^ Which word? |
| DeeperMadness #1121913 4 months ago |
Well... it's not the first time this has happened. Remember this guy?
He was distracted by a lump of meat. And by the end of the film, Herc rode him pretty easily into Hades' home. |

@Picard
The plot hole is that Twilight was trying to stop a disaster from happening and was making a big deal out of nothing, even saying that there was nothing to worry about... When the guardian of a gate leading to the pony equivalent of hell has proven to be feral (attacking ponyville for no reason) and easily distracted (other creatures or possibly Trixie could exploit this) and she she's like "eh, no big"; that's when I question the episode. Wow. I've never ranted about an episode like this before. |

@927: She was like "No big" because she knew she could control Cerberus and thought that she had found the chance to avert the disaster. Remember, the disaster wasn't supposed to happen until Tuesday, or at least so Twilight believed. |

@ picard: Deepest regions? The entrance is now the deepest regions? I'd think, you know, the entrance, that is, the place he's guarding, would be pretty dang shallow. Like, by definition the shallowest point. |

@895
You know, I think somebody could use a LYRE to put that big ol' puppy dog to sleep... Of course once Lyra tries to bring Bon-Bon back from Tartarus she almost makes it before looking back. |

@085: I've only read the first few lines of the Wikipedia article. It says
"In classic mythology, below Uranus (sky), Gaia (earth), and Pontus (sea) is Tartarus, or Tartaros (Greek: Τάρταρος, from τάρταρον "tartar encrusting the sides of casks"). It is a deep, gloomy place, a pit, or an abyss used as a dungeon of torment and suffering that resides beneath the underworld." I thought that "beneath the underworld" sounds pretty damn deep in. |

So what do we know now?
Equestria has a Tartarus. It is guarded by Cerberus, the three-headed dog. Evil monsters are imprisoned there. (Apparently they are not as baddonkey as Nightmare Moon or Discord, who require special measures.) Its gates are acessible, at least to a unicorn, with a day's travel from Ponyville. This, combined with the fact that Fluttershy's pet bunny is named Angel, suggests the broad outlines of Equestrian afterlife beliefs. The Elysian Fields would certainly make a very pony-satisfying Heaven. |

(798 is me.)
Hopefully the entrance is in the Everfree Forest... it certainly gives another good reason for ponies to stay out of the place. |

I personally hope that the Tartarus stuff is never going to be mentioned again and was only a classic reference.
I do not mind all the ancient greek monsters in the show, but this looks a little too much. |
| Zancrow #1122894 4 months ago |
They just used the term Tartarus to not say Hell, I guess? |
| PonyRIG #1122902 4 months ago |
@zancrow: they could have use "hades" too |
| DoctorDreidal #1122977 4 months ago |
1: The realm is Hades, not Hell. Hades contains several afterlife areas (Including Good End and New Game+ Good End)
2: Taken down by Canine-kind's greatest weakness, belly rubs. Who delivered it does not matter. 3: That is one FUCK of an interesting Ball. |
| Zancrow #1123059 4 months ago |
@PonyRIG
Yeah, Hades, Hel, Tartarus. Whatever xD They wanted avoid Hell, though, it seems. |
| JasonTheHuman #1127308 4 months ago |
If it was a plot hole this would be marked explicit, questionable at LEAST.
Oh wait, it's not that kind of plot, is it? |
