Friendship has changed. It's no longer about hanging out, playing games, or singing songs.

It's an endless series of quests, given by a tyrant Alicorn. Friendship, and its use as a weapon, has become a well oiled machine.

Friendship has changed. Destined ponies carry destined artifacts, fight destined enemies. Friendship magic inside their bodies enhance and alter their abilites.

Magic control, Flight control, Emotion control, creature control. Everything is monitored, and kept under control. Friendship, has changed. The age of friendship has become the age of control.

All in the name of averting catastophe from powerful magical enemies. And she who controls friendship, controls history. Friendship has changed.

When Equestria is under total control, Friendship becomes routine.

In my opinion

The style, tatics, and rules of war change, but at it's core war remains the same.

Of course it changed.
War isn't about winning territory or resources, anymore.
It's just to fuel the economy.
They're just proxy wars fought by private military units.
At least, that's how it is in the Metal Gear Solid 4-verse.

"Oh, him? Yeah...I know him. It's going to take awhile...it happened years ago. Did you know, there are three kinds of ponies? Those who seek Strength, those who live for Pride, and those who can Read the tide of battle in an instant. Those are the three. And him? Heh...he was something else entirely..."

War. War never changes.

The Romans waged war to gather slaves and wealth. Spain built an empire from its lust for gold and territory. Hitler shaped a battered Germany into an economic superpower.

In the 21st century, war was still waged over the resources that could be acquired. Only this time, the spoils of war were also its weapons: Petroleum and Uranium. For these resources, China would invade Alaska, the US would annex Canada, and the European Commonwealth would dissolve into quarreling, bickering nation-states, bent on controlling the last remaining resources on Earth.

In 2077, the storm of world war had come again. In two brief hours, most of the planet was reduced to cinders. And from the ashes of nuclear devastation, a new civilization would struggle to arise.

A few were able to reach the relative safety of the large underground Vaults. Your family was part of that group that entered Vault Thirteen. Imprisoned safely behind the large Vault door, under a mountain of stone, a generation has lived without knowledge of the outside world.
Life in the Vault is about to change.

But war never changes.
