I can; the whole "it's like incest" argument is invalid as they're not actually related, therefore any kind of romantic relation between them is perfectly plausible. The only obstacles to their relationship is the age difference and the likelihood Spike would outlive her by a thousand years.

@CodenameOne I don't think there's really a problem because none of the characters have ever frowned upon Spike's crush on Rarity by telling him off because "he's too young" or "he's not a pony." Its not like a secret at all. See Green isn't your Color. Plus Twilight even supports his crush by giving him helpful advice. See Boast Busters. Spike/Twilight is shippable. If you put shipping goggles on while watching certain episodes, you can see that Twilight maybe jealous of Spike's crush on Rarity whenever Twilight gives annoyed groans when the crush thing is played out.

@DreamyFox Twilight cares deeply about Spike. She just isn't very good at showing it. @Saint_Braeburn You mean the voice of nonshippers. Some people want to see some characters actually find love among each other. It's not that hard to understand. Love can happen in ways you wouldn't expect. It has thruout history triumphed to at least some extent over societal perceptions and other obstacles. I think to make all the mane 6 lesbians especially for each other is extreme, but two of them getting together is not really that hard to imagine.

I wouldn't be confused about shipping at all if they acknowledged that this is all a in their head. But the shippers I see never do, they seem too honestly believe that the creators of this show are dropping subtle hints that the the mane cast are secretly lesbians with unresolved sexual tension. Of course it very likely that i'm stereotyping here, but this is my experience when talking to shippers. so please if my statements totally off base feel free to correct me.

Sorry perhaps i wasn't clear in my first post. I ment the writers of the show weren't going to imply romance between the main characters. The main goal of the show is to teach kids about friendship. I sincerely doubt their going to tackle controversial subjects like homosexuality or dating someone you once called a friend. I have no problem with shippers whatsoever, i just don't completely understand it.

@anon904 Well of course the mane 6 will never date. That's because it would create important continuity in a highly episodic series. Not everyone has this avoidance of dating friends. The friendzone isn't an all-powerful force lol. The homosexuality issue is irrelevant to fanfics, which are about what could happen from what is shown, not from what will be shown in the show (sex itself is an example of this. It will never be in the show, but it is definitely in the show's universe. Faust even said so). As for the show itself, if we ever saw canon homosexuality I would be very glad to see it not for the shipping, but for standing up to intolerance of homosexuality. But with how Derpy wentl, not gonna happen.

For example just because your sister is adopted dosent make them any less your sister, its the emotional contention that makes them your sister. If someone could move past that more power too them, but It seems like a large hurdle to cross. @Nebbie yeah the derby fiasco was kinda over exaggerated, only a few people actually complained and they just wanted to be careful cause they didn't think anyone would complain at all. Also thank you for telling me your experience with this shipping thing. Most of the people I talked to seem to get into serous arguments and sometimes flame wars over this stuff, so i assumed that most of these people were deluding themselves (I'm kinda a moron like that). but you have shown me their are people are capable if separating canon from their personal fanon.

On a slightly more serious note, you go on about "Since it's a show about friendship and aimed at little girls, romance will never happen" you should take a look at an anime called "Hamtaro" It was a show about hamsters and thier friendship with one another, by episode ten there were two love-triangles and a cannon pairing, later in the show there were THREE love triangles, and by the end of the second movie, they paired Hamtaro up with Bijou, and killed off one of the triangles, it was pointed to the SAME EXACT group as this cartoon was, so I'm not entirely sure you could say ANY pairings are completely impossible, since there are a few cannon ones among the older ponies anyway, namely thier parents.

@anon976 The Westermarck effect is responsible for that hurdle. If Luna and Celestia didn't really grow up together, they could certainly get it on. Many smart people avoid flame wars altogether unless they feel very strongly about it. The result is that flame wars are not exactly representative. It would be hard for me to put much shipping into my headcanon, simply because there are so many shipping fics and they do not exactly agree. I don't take my headcanon very seriously either (come to think of it, I disassembled most of it upon hearing about the season finale, and never got around to putting most of it bakk together). Lyra/Bon Bon and Derpy/Doctor Whooves are pretty much the only pairings I allow in my headcanon (and are currently the only things in it).

To the OP; you are entitled to your own opinion, and I respect that. I ship these two together myself because of the trust they have in one another, along with the degree of affection they would have built up in the time they have been together, appeal very much for me. It's just too much of a temptation to see two people, so close since childhood develop into something more. Suffice to say, I'm a sucker for "The perfect guy was there all along, you witch" stories (Maybe it's because we always have them told from the females perspective).
