Maybe because they ARE? I know a lot of people seem to believe that they are horses with stripes but zebras are a different species, as close to horses as to donkeys. |

The three species have been a part of one another's society and presumably interbreeding for more than a thousand years.
I'd like to think Zebras are only a recently discovered race. Twilight seemed to be the only one who knew what a Zebra was after all |

Pegasi, unicorns and alicorns are fictional, and are generally considered to be horses or ponies with extra things added on - wings, horns, or both.
A zebra is genuinely a different species; it's not just a horse with stripes. |

In real life, Zebras split off genetically from horses over 4 million years ago. They live in completely different environments, have different behaviors and genetics, etc.
Their bodies are different, too. They're actually weaker than horses and have a different body shape, so they're really tough to ride. Since real zebras aren't considered ponies, why would fictional ones be? |

A Pegasus pony is still a pony, just with wings. A unicorn pony is just a pony with a horn. So they're considered the same species.
But zebras have different bodies, genes, and even different powers (none of the ponies seem to be able to make magic potions, even ones with powerful magic like Twilight.) Add that to the real differences Anon 0198 mentioned, and it's pretty clearly a different species. |

^^^ Regarding Cutie Marks, it could be that zebras don't have them either.
Zecora's mark looks more like a tribal tattoo, and it has nothing to do with her special talent of making brews and potions. |

I already know Zebras are seperate species of horses. That's not the problem.
I'm wondering why this doen't apply to unicorns, pegasi, or alicorns (mythical equine) and treated with the same distinction. |

Because earth pony, pegasus, and unicorn can give offspring that can also give offspring. A zony can not.

because they're considered the same subspecies while zebras shares the same kingdom, class, phylum, order, family, genus as horses...

^^ Zecora comes from a different land, which apparently is full of zebras.
So her parents were both zebras. Babadingldoo is pointing out that if Zecora were to have a baby with a male pony, that baby would be sterile, like a mule. It's a genetic dead end because zebras and ponies are separate species. |

The various 'ponies' (pegasi, unicorns, earthponies) interbreed fully, producing fertile offspring. Therefore they are technically the same species.
...but I suspect this has already been mentioned. |

Because Equidae (or Equines) are subdivided into three groups; horses, donkeys, and zebras. Ponies being a smaller version of a horse. |

Twilight seems to have a lot of respect for Zecora, especially since she’s the one she comes to whenever she can’t solve a problem. She probably doesn’t use potions because she doesn’t know how to make them well, its uncharted territory for her. Just because you own a cookbook doesn’t mean you’re a great chief. |

I misread the comment, mistaking it as zebras couldn't reproduce. We only found out about pegasi, unicorns, earthponies being able to interbreed with each other in a subtle way a few episodes ago. So if that means pegasi and unicorn are in the same species of pony with earthponies, what will happen if Zebras in the show be able to interbreed with all three? It not an impossible idea (at least on the show). There had been several other species of human able to interbreed with us. |

Let's think about it like Mass Effect:
Ponies are humans. Pegasi/Unicorns/Earth Ponies are seperate races. Zebras, etc are like the other sapient species, e.g. Turians, Asari et al. Seperate but on the same level. |
