My personal fanon says that he's the personal bodyguard of the princess and that they've grown close due to their time together, which is why they're getting married. Twilight didn't like to mention him before now because of the scandal of royalty marrying a commoner, let alone the fact that he's only a unicorn.
Or, alternatively, he was on a secret mission and they had to keep mum about it all. The only other thing I can think of is that he's a bit of a twat to her because of his amazing abilities as a warrior and she doesn't like mentioning him for that very reason. |

He's the black sheep of the family. He did something to shame the family name in Canterlot and he isn't mentioned, ever, as a result.
To get away from his reputation, he fled to a neighboring country and became Cadence's bodyguard, and fell in love with her. By the time he returns, only Twilight and her family remember his past fail. Awkwardness ensues. Then Cadence ends up being someone completely different. Even more awkwardness ensues. |

AND MAYBE, maybe, a series which, at most, represents only 60 days of someones life...doesn't NEED to explain where someone was? Have you never gone 60 days without seeing a family member? You've never had 60 days, through your whole life, that you didn't see one single person in your family? Twilight's fucking parents have been in ONE EPISODE and nobody wonders "oh where were they we thought they were dead and/or didnt exist wah wah" yeesh you guys grow hte hell up |

Yes, two years time passage, but each episode focuses on a day or two at most. 50 years could pass with only two episodes, but that wouldn't turn the non-mention of a character into a travesty when that character showed up. |

Well, that being the case I'm going with the idea that he either lives WAAAAYY out in the boonies (Cadence's province being far away) and has simply been a non-issue in Twilight's life, or he's done something to warrant him being a touchy conversation point. I have a cousin that's like that.

If they are siblings, I don't see it as that unbelievable that she never mentioned him to anyone. I don't talk about my older brother all that much and most of my friends probably don't even know I have one. There isn't even any kind of traumatic reason for it, I just don't generally have any reason to talk about him. |
