Pegasi live in a military collective like the Spartans. They have parents, but their parents didn't have much role in raising them. They consider their unit to be their real family.
And yes, I totally pulled that out of my plot. |

By introducing one or both of Fluttershy's parents as bombastic, confident, and still as kind as her. As for Rainbow, she strikes me as somepony who isn't on good terms with her folks. Got nothing more than that. Better than the 'Dash was an orphan' card that's been pulled so many times by fic writers. |

It's subtle social commentary;
Unicorns are the educated upper-middle class, who have stable well panned families. That doesn't mean the father doesn't have a mistress on the side and the mother doesn't have a 6-martini before lunch "social" drinking habit...it just means they do everything in a reserved, civilized fashion. Earth Ponies are rednecks. They have big families because the Church of Equestria tells them they can't use birth control. Then they die before they're 50. Pegasai are a mystery. I like to think Dash's father is dead and her mother is way too pushy & demanding. As for Scootaloo, I think her mom is a drunk and her abusive dad beats her with a belt (why would a pony need a belt) for the slightest transgression. That's not Scootahate...it just shows how important her relationships outside family are. |

Pound Cake's parents are two earth ponies. There haven't been any pegasi with pegasi parents.
Maybe pegasi families aren't common outside of Cloudsdale. |

Maybe its just uncommon for pegasi parents to still associate with their kids
I mean they were based on a military society. Maybe after a certain age they just think "You left the nest and you can fly, don't need to see me anymore" I still like to think that Scootaloo is an orphan or has a single parent though. |
