99% of what's being said against Purple Tinker in these threads is:
She's transgender [which is hateful and irrelevant] She's a thief [which is ridiculously untrue] 99% of that thread is tranny, tranny, tranny, thief. For those who don't know: Purple Tinker ran BroNYCon. It quickly became the top convention for this fandom and in some ways became a victim of its own success, as people reported being turned away at the January con if they hadn't RSVPed in advance. Purple Tinker put a ton of her own money into the con and worked extremely hard for many months. Apart from Sethisto, no one worked harder than Tinker for this fandom. She worked hard to a fault, trying to be everything to everyone. Anyone who ever attended a BroNYCon or a Brony NYC meetup benefitted from her hard work and friendship and there are thousands of comments at the meetups groups to this effect. Eventually, things became too stressful for her and she collapsed in a catatonic state during the January Con. The BroNYCon staff had already felt that her leadership was seriously slipping and that she'd been short with them, and they decided to banish her to the moon, an action which gave them no joy as most of them still considered her a friend. Tinker was angry and heartbroken, and there was a lot of stress and anger all round. Running a con this size is very difficult. The BroNYCon staff are wonderful people who worked extremely hard and worked without sleep. I have no doubt that BroNYCon is in the best possible hands now. But Tinker was among the best of them, and this fandom owes her a debt, not just for BroNYCon but for her many other works. She opened up her home, her bank account, and her life to us and deserves a lot of thanks. I attended a few BroNYCons and a few monthly meetups. I was never part of staff, but I got to meet everyone on the staff and consider them all friends. The drama is a shame. Tinker is not an undramatic person, but neither is Rarity and we all still like her. The people spreading lies about Tinker and writing "tranny tranny tranny thief" all over 4chan are the worst kinds of fans, the sort of hateful people I thought this fandom was above. A similar hatred came out with Yamino, who is also a transgender pony fan. I knew Yamino from the Homestuck fandom as being a good artist who made a weird comic. I certainly disagree with her that Derpy is offensive, but she's entitled to her opinion. Certain people thought otherwise, and suddenly it was all Yamino's fault that Derpy was being reedited. A huge amount of hatred came out, elevating Yamino as if she were running an entire movement. This is bullying of a transgender person, just old-fashioned bullying and bigotry. I'm a pretty normal, levelheaded straight male. I don't sit still for racism or sexism and I'm not gonna sit still for this. Love and tolerate? Unless you're transgender, then we bully you to death … That's not acceptable. |

All these "theft" accusations are kind of sickly ironic. For one thing, the con was a home business of mine; in other words, I WAS the con, from a legal standpoint. You can't "steal" from yourself. Secondly, I LOST money on the con. The tax burden exceeds the amount I'm being left with, and the tax burden-- just like the income-- is 100% on me. So... yeah. |

First, you say "The con was a home business" in your own words. You can't steal from yourself, but you can steal from a business, even a home business.
Second, I can't comprehend how you could actually lose any significant amount of money running something like that. I saw your dA journal counting the costs. Note how you didn't add any of the profits from merchandising (which, yeah, you spend on, but sell at profit, or else, no con would ever bother selling merch) or VA sigs (Which is obviously profitable, or else why would they even bother, even though they only get like half the proceeds, they still make a pretty penny) and still managed to get to a dollar amount of close to $1,500. That's still a profit, not a loss, even thought the actual profits are much bigger than that. And then... you admit that you pocketed every single cent, since the income is "100% on you" in your own words, again. *Sigh* |

I was self-employed. You cannot steal from yousrelf.
And I also "pocketed every single cent" of the tax burden, which is likely to be greater than the amount of money I was left with on the end. If I (for instance) was left with $15K in money and $20K in tax debt, I didn't gain $15K, I lost $5K. If I DID make any money, it was very little-- and earning a small amount of money for running a con is not illegal, even if it was a not-for-profit (which it wasn't). Most people who work for not-for-profits get paid. This is neither illegal nor unethical. Actually, it would be unethical NOT to pay people for working. |
