I suppose that BG characters are more or less collaborative OCs, with exception that their design was made up by the people who run the show.

The thing I've noticed is, OCs are made by one. Background characters are made by everyone. Background characters also (almost) never become canon, leaving the door open for pretty much anything, while OCs are already printed out in as many ways as their creators can think of.
Simply put, OCs aren't nearly as fun for fans. |

Background characters are still canon characters. They're just not ones with well-defined lives or personalities. We just fill in the blanks.
And it's a collective effort, done by the community as a whole. Which is very different from the OC approach, where one person does everything. That said, I don't dislike OC's (though there are many bad ones.) But it's silly to compare them to background ponies. Apples and oranges. |

I really don't know what to say, OCs are just OCs, can't get rid of them can't make them any better unless by the person who made them. But setting fucking standards for OCs which are really high is fucking ridiculous especially for kids, they jsut screw around and do remember people this show was made for kids, the fanbase probably not, but the target audience we cannot disagree with or we'd look like hypocritical fucks. |

One day the oven was broken and Dinky decided to try to fix it. She had been tinkering with things around the house for a long time before this, and she jumped at the chance to do something worthwhile with her slowly developing skill.
>ONE HOUR LATER< she unsuccessfully worked at the problem after about an hour. She thought to her self for a moment, analyzing the interior of the cold dark oven. She started messing around with the pilot light. suddenly the oven roared to life, it had gone into self cleaning mode. She couldn't feel it at first but soon the inside of the oven became warm. Dinky quickly started pushing at the oven door with her front hooves but the little filly realized she simply didn't have the strength to push the heavy door open. Soon, the oven's insides had become an inferno. Before long her hooves became singed and she could smell her mane being burned to the roots. Dinky cried in agony as the heat increased, hot pain engulfing her. The oven continued to roast her to death. when the oven had finally finished she was burnt crisp to the bone, covered in boiled fat and caked blood, she would never get her Engineering Cutie Mark. BECAUSE SHE WAS DEAD. >SEVERAL HOURS LATER< Derpy had come home after a long day's work and was ready for hugs from her most favorite filly in all of Equsetria. As she opened the door to her home, she could smell what was a mixture of smoke and something horrible like rotten fruit. She quickly ran into the kitchen to the source of the foul odor. The grey pony saw that it was coming from the oven. She lowered the oven door with her left hoof. Her crossed eyes widened and her mouth opened agape, tears rolled down her face. OC's are completely fan-made (by a single person), so I'm not supposed to care. BG Ponies are canon. We just build personalities for them with fan-work, based on their acting on the show. BG Ponies are much more fun than OC's. And they are way more beautiful, too =/ |

Good pony OC's are rare. Most of them are like what the last anon said, and a recolor of most canon ponies, like Pandacoon said. If the artis is too lazy to come up with a design of his own, then get him ought of here! |

The background ponies are more interesting because their behaviors and personalities are either
1. Triggered by an event in the show (Accidental like Derpy or purposeful like Lyra's human-like sitting posture) 2. Tailored to match the show itself. This makes them more interesting to follow and contribute to, since it's fun to see it seem to be true during elements of the story. Also, it's fun when a background pony creates so much momentum that the writers actually incorporate the fan-created personality into the show (Like Derpy Hooves). OCs just suck because they are for the most part uncreative Mary-Sue characters (Like Nyx. Seriously, how many times has that type of character been done before?), or completely fail to fit into the fictional reality the show has created for itself (Like Cteno). |
