Well, duh.
Now it looks like Hasbro wants to hide disabled people.
But whatever, what's done's been done.

Of course! If I were retarded, I'd be proud to have Derpy represent my race!

That's what I find so stupid about the whole thing. By effectively re-writing her character, they've sent the exact opposite message. And they go so far as to say that tolerance and acceptance are the motivating reason. If you need any sort of proof that Hasbro is hopelessly bass-ackwards, look no further.

I'm done caring, though. Most of you should know my opinion on the matter.

GUYS, IT'S TOTALLY ABLEIST TO HAVE A CHARACTER THAT MIGHT BE IN ANYWAY LESS INTELLIGENT THAN A NORMAL CHARACTER, YOU MUST REMOVE HER RIGHT NOW OR THE PEOPLE WITH LOW I.Q.'S WILL BE OFFENDED FOR NO REASON >:(

Well, if she was mentally disabled what did her appearance show us?

A mentally disabled pony destroying everything and being forbidden from participation by Rainbow Dash. It's not a flattering image when it's viewed from that perspective.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The question is, though: How do you make a character a positive role model for people with disabilities without highlighting their disabilities?

What I mean is, you can't just make a character be disabled and then make that disability not hinder them in some way.

This is something really hard to pull off in the films and TV, and probably even harder to do in a cartoon show for young children.

But, knowing this show's writers, I think they could pull it off.

I agree, but that's why the matter has to be entered into with some forethought, not inadvertently stumbled upon through a series of errors.

RD is an ass to everyone 746. That's why she's my least favorite pony.

It's because of season 2 writers! First season Dash was pretty cool, but now they've made her a mean-spirited butt monkey. When she isn't busy being a bitch, she's busy getting humiliated.

To be fair though I still like her alright and I do enjoy seeing her read books. She's getting a little better as time goes on. Unfortunately she's still just the kind of person(or pony) I couldn't imagine wanting to be around.

@ProfessorOfHoers

True, but it's a touchy subject that gets no resolution in the episode. No one calls her out on it, nothing suggests her irritation is anything less then fully justified.

From the uninformed perspective it just doesn't look good.

I don't want to sound like a jerk but what if her name was Patrick Star?

I think the problem is that the writers haven't really fleshed out her character in regards to her element at all. I haven't seen a fucking shred of her loyalty this season. Again, that goddamn Mare Do Well episode practically went AGAINST that with her very best friends being disloyal to her. How cruel is it that the mare who embodies loyalty itself cannot expect loyalty from her own friends? All they had to do was ask. Christ.

@ProfessorOfHoers

That is an intentional portrayal and goes beyond destroying everything, he does quite a lot more and has actually been helpful at times as I recall.

And if her name was Patrick then her name would not seem to sound like an insult of some sort. It would be odd that she had a masculine name and voice, but it would make the scene feel very different and the implications people would see in it would likewise be altered.

I think it was implied she wouldn't have listened to them, so that's why they went with the MDW plan.

Yeah, but it's the principle of the thing, Rock. If they had asked her and she had said something stupid like "Ha, yeah right, I'm entitled!" then they would have been justified. As it is, instead of asking their close friend to tone down the showboating, they instead knowingly went behind her back and publicly humiliated her several times. But whatever, that episode is old news and most people agree that it was a fucked-up attempt at a moral lesson.

Rainbow Dash is fine. If you couldn't tolerate someone like her IRL, you're pretty intolerant.
She gets slightly frustrated at Derpy after Derpy disregards her advice, causing Rainbow to be nearly crushed by a falling beam (no, Derpy did not cause that beam to fall because of her derped eyes. It was behind her and she had no reason to go near it. That was very much Derpy's fault.), and everyone's all OMG SHES NOT ACCEPTING OF DERPY. Once she told Derpy to not touch anything, she calmed down immediately and didn't even seem to get mad after being dragged into a hole.
Think about it: What would you do in her place?

@Impious yes, the time she saved Spike and Rarity when nopony else was doing anything really didn't show her loyalty at all. Neither did the time she flew over a damn train just to get to AJ (abandoning Pinkie Pie and Rarity was okay because bringing AJ bakk was more important), nor was telling Fluttershy about the cider (and for that matter, putting Fluttershy in front) a loyal thing to do.
Overall we just havn't seen Dash get many opportunities for loyalty, due to a lot of episodes focusing on particular characters.

TL;DR:
ITT ppl complain about Dash becuz apparently loyalty and ego are complete opposites that cannot coexist, then bitch further becuz she's not constantly trying to be super duper friendly to everypony like Fluttershy, and can actually get a little frustrated when she has every reason to.

No, some of us actually think that them doing what Rainbow couldn't, and then saving the shokk to her for later, was a good idea. What makes you think most agree with you?
They definitely had to help save the day. Ponies would hav died otherwise due to Rainbow not being up to par.
The costume is somewhat hard to justify, but if they appeared as themselves, Rainbow might argue with them and not learn her lesson.

I don't understand that logic at all, but to each his own. It's old news anyways.

They could have at least tried talking to her.

RD was not being a jerk at all in the scene I agree. In fact, she was nicer than usual. Plus, the town hall fell apart due to its age, not that Derpy forcibly wrecked it. Seriously, the critics need some perspective and context

Mostly agree with OP, except for one thing. Derpy doesn't fall nearly in the catagory for "retarded", does she? (In my headcanon, which is the mean of all appearances in the show, depictions in fan fiction and art) Derpy's a klutz, I'll give you that, but generally, does anyone here feel that she can't possibly live on her own, take care of Dinky and/or Sparkler just because she drops the ball once in a while?

In any case, go Derpy! Too bad the trolls won this one.

The whole situation was one big misunderstanding based on mis-communication. Tabitha St. Germain was under the impression that she was voicing a male character so she lowered the pitch of her voice and adopted the lisp that is very common for clumsy male characters *I promise not to go on the obvious tangent*. However most of the fans recognize Derpy as being female so the voice did lead them to assume the down syndrome connection. There was no malicious intent in the performance, the motivation behind it was the same as the motivation behind the performance of Snails which is why he was brought up so frequently. This could easily be solved by re doing the scene with the proper sounding voice for the character but not removing the underlying purpose for the scene which was to be an acknowledgement of the fan community.

As to the exaggeration of the scene I fail to see how the physical comedy that took place and is common in most cartoons makes any insinuation as to her intelligence except when combined with the misunderstanding caused by the voice.

The one debateable topic is the name Derpy which is still under debate as to whether or not it is an actual slur. I personally have never heard it used as a referance to the mentally disabled, I know that doesn't mean it doesn't happen but the fact is that the word "derp" has no clinical or legal definition, therefore any definition that can be contrived for it is entirely arbitrary and relative to the person using it and the context under which they use it. I've used "derp" for years in regards to myself when I miss something obvious; like spending ten minutes searching an area for my keys when they're on the counter right in front of me.
