Anywho, I shall have to disagree with Ms. Rogers on the final point. I'm still rather disappointed in Hasbro, at the very least, and I don't really feel unjustified in doing so. But you know what? I guess I just wish they would have made Derpy shine somehow instead of simply making her a clutz, regardless of her name. A name is just a label, what matters is the essense of what's being reffered to . That would have been in the shows spirit: "Guess what, you see this character as retarded and challanged in every way, but look what beatiful things she can do". That's quite true. Hasbro wants your money and their corporate imagine is worth LOTS AND LOTS of money to them.
People will complain about Derpy and being ableist (whatever the fuck that means) but I don't see that many people complaining about the working and safety conditions in the factories that the toys they create and sell. People are mad at Apple about Foxcon but it's no different than almost any other company's MO. Hasbro. They have sweatshops in China and other countries as well. But, 10 people got mad about ol' googley eyes. |

Well, Mattel just makes shitty products. The comparison between Hasbro and EA that I am making is that Hasbro is capable of churning out absolute awesome, but they always roll a critical botch, so to speak, and find a way to fuck themselves over.

If Hasbro decides to fuck us in the ass, we will take it and like it. And to be honest, this fandom deserves to be fucked in the ass some more. I don't really understand the hate against AKR here. She didn't think Derpy meant retarded either, and she wasn't offended when the scene aired. Considering she has a severely disabled son, I think her opinion counts more than most.
The name was originally supposed to be Ditzy-Doo. Wonder how that's gonna affect fanon. And honestly, I don't think RD calling her "Ditzy" would have caused a bigger shitstorm. For one, there was already precedent for that name in the show. Also, Ditzy connotes "airhead", not "retard". And for those who say that "Derpy" doesn't mean retard either, I agree. BUT, remember that one of the first things 4channers said upon noticing Derpy in Ep1 was "Haha is that a retard pony in the back?" I love the fact that even AKR had no idea what "Ableist" meant before this. It seems like no one did except the easily-offended PC types who were screaming it at her. And honestly, I can't totally blame Hasbro for caving to the whiner minority. The problem with people who bitch about being offended is that they don't shut up, and very likely would have gone to the media if Hasbro hadn't "fixed" the "problem", and toy companies don't exactly have the best reputation with them already. If I was in their position, I probably would do the same thing (except for un-derping her eyes). Hasbro is a business like any other; they don't like controversy, no matter how stupid. If they were truly evil (like, say, MATTEL) then they would've excised the Derpy scene entirely and/or banned the episode from ever appearing again, recalled the Friendship Express DVD, and probably sued anybody who dared complain about their actions; they sure as shit wouldn't let a site like this exist. Remember, we're still getting brony-themed toys in the fall (Zecora, Trixie, Lyra, DJ-P0N3), and DHX doesn't completely hate us yet. In other words, we got off pretty lucky. TL;DR With any luck, this is over and the damage is done. Derpy/Ditzy-Doo will move back to being an Easter egg character just like she was meant to be. Will her eyes be derped in future? I hope so, but we just won't know until Season 3 airs. |

I went through the whole article, and I'm not mad. Just, moderately disappointed. It seemed inevitable that using "Derpy" as a name would cause shit(though I wish that it didn't happen to do just that, but that would've been certainly naive to deny the possibility), and after this whole Derpy fiasco, fans could've just interpreted "Derpy" as a nickname Dash used to refer to Ditzy, much like Pinkie calling RD "Dashie"(keeping the character's canon name while still having a nod given to us by the crew). I know that the majority of the fanbase is completely tired of anyone drudging up this conversation over and over again, but please bear with my opinion.
I'm perplexed at how ultimately the option that Hasbro took was probably considered the most "secure" (#3, which in a way was more solid than #2). #4 is an option that CAN in fact still be left on the table. Although, I would've been glad if they DID go with option #1 and stand by their decisions whilst not bending to the outrage. Especially since only a few had problems while the majority of responders had positive things to say. Saying that one's opinion cannot change anything would certainly be a lie, because as we've seen in recent times, it CAN. Now surely Derpy will just be, once again, a voiceless background pony. But although this happened, I'm not gonna stop liking/watching the show. In the end, and this is probably the truest thing that can be said in this situation, it isn't Derpy that made me/us love the show, it is the whole FiM world itself that did, the many characters within the show, and the wonderful creators and workers that bring us this fine show. I'm done trying to argue on this topic, but needed to voice my stance on this particular thing before I go back to groaning at/moderately tolerating more shitstorms.
