So this person is to blame. And this really says it all: But I got about 10 emails saying how offended folks were. People labeled me an "ableist" (a word I'd never heard of) and said that I was being insensitive to the disabled by calling this character "derpy. 10 complaints. 200 praises. We talked about various options of what to do. 1. Do nothing. 2. Cut Rainbow saying "Derpy" but keep Derpy's voice. 3. Cut Rainbow saying "Derpy" and change Derpy's voice. 4. Find a creative way to change Derpy's name in a future episode And I was honestly torn about which action should be taken. I went back and forth and back again. It was a no win situation. Fans were going to be offended no matter what. "No matter what, at least 10 people were going to be mad. Nevermind that every solution but the first would piss off the 200 people who sent me praises- those 10 mad people! Think of their FEELINGS" This was a bad decision. She admits right here that she got 2,000% more positive feedback than negative feedback- but her choices were made to appeal to the minority instead of the majority who not only had no problem, but were ecstatic with the scene. She chose to offend the people who were happy over the few that were upset. And that's stupid. Inexcusably stupid.

The thing that really, REALLY bugs me here is where she says she didn't know Derpy meant anything other than clumsy. It never meant retarded. I think those 10 emails gave her their own skewed definition of it, and she believed them. And judging by EqD's comments, at least a few are trusting her idea of what Derpy means. We could be on the verge of Derpy acually becoming a word for retard. And that is the worst possible outcome for both sides , as it creates another ableist word that can also mean to mess up, and for us non-offended people we hav to drop the Derpy name.

@KlinKitty The voice wasn't unique in the first place. It was a generic 'dumb' voice used be all sorts of cartoon characters. The problem was that the voice made her sound especially dumb in comparison (inb4 butthurt raeg) which lead to people thinking it was a pot shot at the disabled. The new voice makes it look like even a normal sounding person can be clumsy and over the top. But then again we're not allowed to have normal people in our fandom because they're 'generic' and not 'special' enough for us. 83c

I might as well add that all 'Special' traits Derpy has (A daughter, muffin obsession, Mailmare) are all FAN ideas, and something Hasbro probably barely read up on in the first place. They just noticed we liked this paticular background pony, and being the nice guys they are, gave us an awesome shout-out. When people who WEREN'T aware of the fandom's ideas got insulted, Hasbro (Who also didn't see anything past 'popular meme on the internet') just edited her (Instead of taking her out completely) in order to pacify both sides. Of course, instead of being civil and calm we shat our diapers instead. :3

She was confronted with the options, but she knew that none of the options would have sat well with anyone and even then, the final decision doesn't rest on her but with the higher ups. I'm glad that she finally gave a real answer and even though I'm still disappointed with the changes in the scene (They should have just replaced Derpy's name with Ditzy as it was meant to be and kept the rest of the scene the same) I feel like we can put this whole drama to rest. Unfortunately, everyone just wants to keep it going...

I don't think it's quite as simple as offending the majority. I think the people who made that decision thought bronies would be disappointed and not offended like those who were. As such, I think they felt it was reasonable to disappoint a lot of people to keep a few people from being offended. Apparently, most people don't feel that way, but I understand that. Also, even if the community doesn't mean Derpy to be terribly derogatory doesn't mean people who aren't in an online community shouldn't find it offensive. Derpy comes from "derp," and people do make "duhr/derr" sounds when mocking people who actually do make those noises. So for the target demographic, Derpy isn't suitable. Feel free to try to take that apart. I doubt I'll be here to defend it. This Derpy thing isn't nearly the problem most people make it out to be.

To be honest when people look back on this they'll see that this was fuss was over something very minute and minor. I didn't like the decision that they chose for the edit. But respected them for it. I wasn't so much upset at the edit but the voice of reason and cause behind it.
