I really like with the ponies are drawn in this sort of more realistic, yet not too much so style. |

This is a scene from the author Valkyrie-Girl's "Shining Tyrant" storyline, which goes something like this
"Long ago there lived two regal pony sisters who ruled the land of Equestria. The elder sister governed the day while the younger ruled over the night. As the ages wore on, the elder sister began to realize that, though the ponies of the land worked and played during her blazing day and slept during her sister's cool night, they loved the younger sister for her kindness and beauty. This weighed heavily on the elder sister's heart. Why should they love the princess of the night more than her? What if they rose up against her one day? What if her sister betrayed her and took the throne for herself? These thoughts plagued the ruler of the sun until she could stand it no longer. The fear of betrayal welled up within her and she attacked her younger sister. Though they were evenly matched in power, the ruler of the night was distraught over her sister's sudden betrayal and sustained a mortal wound. In that moment the elder sister realized what she had done and wept bitterly. In an attempt to save her sister's life, the regent of the sun sent the princess of the night to the moon and bound her waning power to the celestial sphere that governed her nighttime sky. With the younger sister safely contained within the moon, the elder vowed to rule Equestria with the same kindness that her sister had. Ashamed of her actions, she took on a new name; Mourning Star. Years passed and for a time she held to her promise but without the younger princess's gentleness and wisdom to temper her own growing lust for power, her heart fell into darkness and she was consumed by her desires. She became ruthless and paranoid, utterly destroying anything and anypony she saw as a threat to her throne. She became known as the Shining Tyrant and all believed that her cruel reign would be eternal." In this scene, titled "Last Hope on the Moon", Twilight Sparkle contemplates her life as the Shining Tyrant's student: "She's the version of Twilight Sparkle that goes with my evil Celestia, Mourning Star. Twilight is the only pony in a thousand years to whom Mourning Star has shown mercy. Rather than removing her horn upon discovering her magical ability, as was Mourning Star's policy, the princess took the young unicorn on as her own personal apprentice. Though she grew up in Canterlot Castle with the Shining Tyrant as her mentor, she never witnessed Mourning Star's cruelty until seeing her treatment of a would be assassin. Though Twilight's faith in her mentor is shaken, she still is not able to accept that Mourning Star is completely evil and begins to bury herself in research. Through this research she finds the story of the royal sisters and discovers that there might be a chance that the younger sister is still alive, trapped in the moon. But even with this discovery, Twilight is powerless to do anything about it and thus Mourning Star's reign continues." Of course, if you look it up on her DeviantART page, what happened on the next scene changes everything... |
