I'm sure its metaphorical like why the Fire Ruby is heart-shaped. I wonder if there's actual dragon related mythology around that concept because a Japanese game called Drakengard used that idea too. If a dragon shares half their life force to another creature, the two of them will share each other's power and pain. And when one of them dies, the other one dies too. I can't remember if Eragon had that concept too or it was just about a dragon and a dragon rider. |

^ Eragon was kind of similar. A dragon and their rider were often described as having a relationship closer than friends, family, or lovers. They could be thought of 2 halves of the same being. |
