Don't forget the Target Canterlot Castle of Cardboard! |
| misnamed #1073816 4 months ago |
All the G4 playsets are rather simple compared to their predecessors. My personal favorite is still the Carousel Boutique, since it doubles as a music box |
| Anonymous #1073822 4 months ago |
Interesting to note that the big flashy castles went on sale during financial boom times, and the cheaper smaller ones during recessions. Less disposable income = cheaper toys. |
| CottonTales #1073830 4 months ago |
the celebration castle was the best of the castles no wait it still is the best |
| PhilSrobeighn #1073831 4 months ago |
I would blame this on us. I mean, I have a bunch of ponies in my cubicle. I'm not putting an entire playset up.
Little girls want playsets, and they're selling toys to us better. |
| E-Pony-Mous #1073837 4 months ago |
Nothing beats Dream Castle's working drawbridge. |
| DeeperMadness #1073887 4 months ago |
Is it worth pointing out that the ponies themselves are an awful lot smaller as well? Not to mention that there are fewer of them. No cousins, either. Where are all of the My Little Griffons?
Anyone would think that G4 is only starting to gain momentum again after riding in on the back of a failed franchise. |
| CottonTales #1073918 4 months ago |
@Deeper
actually MLP was hardly a failed franchise before FIM at its worst it was actually pretty average both in sales and in general reception That being said even though I love FIM I hate most of the toys for it |
| EOCB #1073936 4 months ago |
the transformers toys are getting smaller and smaller too. |
| Nemns #1073955 4 months ago |
Do kids actually even play with toys anymore? :| |
| Anonymous #1073964 4 months ago |
MOAR CARTOONS
LESS TOYS! |

>tv show based on toys funded by the company that makes said toys Yeah, no. |
| DeeperMadness #1074020 4 months ago |
@Cotton:
I must admit, my knowledge of the how well G3 and G3.5 did is pretty sketchy. It just feels like there were goals that weren't met with the latter and that's why such a drastic transformation was done with how the toys are marketed (namely, the show). Even having the G3.5 sub-line seems like a bit of a stop-gap way of sorting out a few kinks in the sales. But as I said, I'm only speculating. Whenever I saw the bundled catalogues at Christmas, they were the ones with the heaviest discounts. |
| Anonymous #1074041 4 months ago |
@Deeper:
Well.I was about to correct you Deeper,but CottonTales ninja'd me. MLP has always been a successful franchise,both with the target demographic and the collectors.However,I do agree with you that something odd was going on the moment they released G3.5. |
| CottonTales #1074073 4 months ago |
@Deeper
yeah...G3.5 could've done better the toys were too much of a change and the playsets were...probably so awful I can't remember if there were any and the show was the limited personalities of G3 (which were fine because they had a lot of characters to cover) with the limited characters of G4; so it didn't really help sales I think G3.5 was the shortest show for that reason. but the regular G3 cartoon was good for basic reference and the generation had the best playsets in my opinion plus it had some of the best custom mail order ponies running up to about 2008 I think (Dream Drifter is still my favorite pony design) G4 toys are mostly good because we have developed personalities to go on, I mean how many people would honestly buy one of these toys if it weren't for the show? TL;DR G3 did well, G3.5 didn't do well, and G4 is doing really well for different reasons |
| DeeperMadness #1074148 4 months ago |
Cotton, you really are the person to see for G3 history, aren't you? XD
I do wonder whether they could paint those castles grey, add a few little moss decals hither and thither and pass the thing off as a haunted ruins playset for all the little girls in the world. They can't always want pretty pink pony princess playsets, right? |
| CottonTales #1074228 4 months ago |
@Deeper
yes X3 I grew up with them so I'm proud to be able to name (nearly) every G3 pony and say one thing I find interesting. But sadly I still know only the core essentials of G1 plus a little about specific episodes Do not underestimate Hasbro's ability to pinkify things...but yes it would probably be better if they toned it down a notch or two |
| Kanrabat #1074262 4 months ago |
Obviously, the price must change accordingly. |
| ManeFlame #1074264 4 months ago |
Sadly most all playsets have been going that way.
Certainly a farcry from the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Technodrome and sewer playset, and the G.I. Joe Cobra fortress. All playsets are pretty much tiny little things now. |
| Clover_Patch #1074313 4 months ago |
Do we know how much money the wedding set will be? What about prices on the past ones? |
| CottonTales #1074426 4 months ago |
By a quick google search
Dream Castle- $30 (used from ebay) Royal Castle- I can't find this one Celebration Castle- $40 (new from ebay) Crystal Rainbow Castle- $350 (Amazon-oh god, last in stock...oh god) Pony Princess Wedding Castle- $25 (retail price) so you can see the pony princess wedding castle is the cheapest and dream castle and celebration castle would cost about the same if they were both new (and crystal rainbow castle is ridiculous but it's gotten 4.1 out of 5 stars so I guess it's worth it) |
| E-Pony-Mous #1074482 4 months ago |
The 1984 Wards wish book lists the original Dream Castle at $27.77. (http://www.wishbookweb.com/)
Adjusted for inflation, the castle would cost $60.58 today. (http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/) |
| Clover_Patch #1074483 4 months ago |
I wonder if the Dream Castle used to be more or less than it is now. I saw a photo of one that somebody melted in their oven trying to bake on sculpey attachments and knowing it's only $30 on Ebay makes me feel a little better.
http://toynewsi.com/index.php?itemid=18326 -_- I knew $25 sounded too good to be true. This site says $34.99 US. Might be more like $40 when it hits Canada. |
| Clover_Patch #1074487 4 months ago |
Whoops, should have reloaded. Holy crap, that's a lot of inflation. |
| CottonTales #1074505 4 months ago |
Wait apparently its $34 for the pony princess wedding castle so everything aside from crystal rainbow castle costs about the same currently
even though the wedding castle seems pretty small |
| E-Pony-Mous #1074518 4 months ago |
IIRC, the 2006 castle cost about $50, and it didn't really come with anything. |
| CottonTales #1074533 4 months ago |
@E-Pony
$50? damn Amazon is really going overboard then but then again it is the last in stock I don't know if they change prices for things like that |
| Anonymous #1074683 4 months ago |
@CottonTales
If you're a toy collector (like me), you might want to do the research of how rare it is. If it's rare, it'll cost a lot of money to get it. |
| Anonymous #1074938 4 months ago |
I was hoping you would show the difference between "Crystal Rainbow Castle" and "Rainbow Princess Castle". |
| Posey #1075304 4 months ago |
G4 is a pretty sucky generation for toys. |
| Anonymous #1102178 4 months ago |
You have to consider the econamey and the fact that Hasbro is likely not sure how long the popularity of the show will last it's not easy bringing back a dead franchise. |
| Anonymous #1102182 4 months ago |
@EOCB rely? if anything I'd say theyve gotten bigger then the 80's toys on average yes there's nothing the size of fortress maxsamus but something THAT big can be a very hard sell. |
