>implying that there is any democracy in Equestria

Seriously, how could they have an election episode with the existence of Princess Celestia? It'd be ludicrous even by cartoon standards.

Ergo, no democracy in Equestria.

How can you win an election if the other candidate has mayor cutie mark. She's basically appointed by divine mandate.

Also: dupe dupe dupe.

Why would Mayor be proud of being defeated by a googly-eyed mare?

^it's a reference to a real life famous fuck-up by a newspaper.
The implication is that Derpu did not win. That's why the mayor is smiling.

In my head-canon, Equestria never quite gave up the government structures we saw in "Hearth's Warming Eve". The country is a patchwork of local governments, partially democratic, partially feudal, and partially totalitarian:
- Earth pony villages have elected leaders.
- Unicorn towns are feudal baronies with a hereditary Lord or Lady ruling them.
- Pegasus cities are miltary garrisons, ran by a junta led by a military Commander.

Sometimes contests are so close that they had actually printed two versions of the story. All they would have to do is pull out the losing story section when they load the news stands.

Newspaper technology has become so much better that the turnaround time to include late stories have been cut down to no more than two hours.
