Don't worry. An animator promised us that Derpy will remain Derpy. She just won't be Derpy in the iTunes versions of episodes where she's addressed by name. |

Truth be told, modifying the Derpy scene would have been fine as long as it was done right. However, what we got was a bit rushed and doesn't gel all that well.
First, we have Rainbow Dash not saying Derpy's name. Just having her say "Now be careful!" felt off. She sounded like she was going to address the pony in question only to be cut off. This stands out and makes the whole editing even more forced. This could have been easily solved if they had Rainbow call Derpy something else instead. Something like "Ditzy" would have been fine and maybe even worked out better. Ditzy is name used for Derpy already so the fan shout out would still be there, and it is visually a less "offensive" word so nobody should be offended. That is win-win right there. Sadly, they just went and removed Derpy from the audio which makes the rush job more obvious. The second thing wrong with this edit was most definitely the new voice. Nothing against her voice actress, but it didn't fit the character nor the scene. It is noticeably bland and less goofy than how Tabitha did it. This made her lines less memorable in my opinion. She pretty much sounds like every other pony. A Plain Jane. Which makes the scene a lot less humorous overall. There isn't much energy being put into the lines either which also causes the humor to suffer. This is probably due to the fact that this was a rushed edit and they just needed somebody to say the lines to replace Tabitha's "offensive" performance. Not going to say much about the eyes because that is too obvious. Overall, this change lacks professional quality and it shows. But what did we expect? Enough bronies made a big enough fuss about it that Hasbro had to do something. If a bunch of "grown men" found Derpy offensive then there would likely be parents who would find her offensive. Not wanting to be labelled for discrimination against the mentally disabled, the change had to made. So now here we stand. A fandom that just got kicked in the balls by their own foot. This change is forever a reminder of what happened when we looked a gift horse in the mouth. The fandom's respect took a major hit recently and it'll be awhile before we can recover from it. So to end on positive note, that DVD just became more valuable now that it holds the original uncut Derpy scene. |
