I guess what I'm trying to say is it replaces "here's an unflattering character" with "your existence stirs controversy thus we refuse to acknowledge it."

I wish I knew who was responsible for making the decision to change her... Just to ask 'why?'

we have already established that nobody likes the change and its pretty damn obvious what itunes did was the wrong thing to do.

Well the why is obvious -- sweeping it under the rug to stifle controversy and get back to pony goodness.

The question is 'how is this a remotely responsible solution to anything at all?'

Fuck the lot of you.

You know why? because people bitched "DURR HURR SHE SOUNDS RETARDED."

And you bitched, and you bitched, and you bitched.

This is the end result of your bitching.

Goddamit, do you remember the lesson of "Suited for Success?"

DON'T LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH.

And you fuckers did. So, you deserve it.

And it's not worse. It's better. That way, Hasbro has shown us that we shouldn't take them for granted. They were nice to us, we bit their hand, they took it away.

Seems fair, no?

One reason black characters are rare on television shows that aren't specifically aimed at a black audience is exactly because it is safer to not have them then risk a portrayal that may be considered offensive.

Remwember that jackass fella a while back said that he'd do something that we'd all hate?

Maybe this is it.

4Kids also did this in an episode of One Piece. But the fans of that show didn't need more reasons to be mad about that dub.

Fronzel -- and having a subset of people considered "off limits" just perpetuates everything. People stop getting offended when the subject matter is no longer considered unusual.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you're offended, alright, yeah, make it known that that's not cool.

But like, trying to scrub it out is so, so much worse.

You young'uns may not remember a character named Sunflower. She was a black centaur from Fantasia. There were complaints because she was acting as a servant to a very pretty white centaur.

Disney's solution was to delete her. (I wish I could remember the source of this statement because it's not mine originally, but:) Disney determined their world wasn't perfect because a black centaur served a white centaur. In a perfect world according to Disney, there could be no black centaurs.

A more creative and appropriate "final solution to the Derpy Problem" would have been to include her more in future episodes, and show that indeed, she's a beloved and valued member of the Ponyville community despite her "differences." Anyone remember Corky from "Life Goes On"? Can you imagine deleting him from the show because someone didn't like that a character with Downs syndrome was portrayed as having less than a genius-level intellect?

Which, surprise, is exactly how the bronies usually feel about her anyway.

^^ This. But I don't think they destroyed/killed Derpy like many people seems to think.
They edited her so that Apple would accept to share the episode on iTunes. I wouldn't be surprised that she will be back to normal next time we see this episode. With maybe her new voice.

^^^^ Can we refrain from talking about a "final solution" when discussing a character that many think is implied to be mentally handicapped?

I think having her around as handicapped as she is would have worked as long as they show that Ponyville accepts her for who she is, and that it's okay to have mentally handicapped people around.

I see people like that all the time. They're a part of society just like you and me. That's the cold truth of it. Whether they do goofy things in a cartoon or not, it shouldn't matter. The 'sane' ponies have done plenty of crazy crap that was just laugh fodder. It doesn't make them lesser for it.

Wasn't Japanese ganguro a rebellion against traditional feminine beauty standards? IIRC it didn't actually have anything to do with racial outlooks.

Okay, people, stop griping.

The question is not who's to blame. the question is: HOW DO WE FIX IT?

We have been asked by the animators to please NOT spam the studio with complaints. the choice was out of their hands....

May I suggest an old-fashioned snail-mail campaign? "We love Derpy" cards, with fan art, and the slogan "we love the original Derpy. Please give her back." That's it, nothing more, nothing less. A few thousand of those, sent with a POSITIVE attitude, and SOMEONE will get the message.

What Ferrotter said. Ideally there would be episodes portraying her in a tasteful manner, rather than being an annoyance to the main characters and destroying everything she touches. Now it seems neither side of the argument is happy.
