In my opinion, the implied or inferred racial designations in the show (ex: zebra = black) should be taken with a grain of salt. Officially, there are no races in Equestria in the sense of black, white, Asian, etc. |

2. Zecora is not black. She's zebra. 3. No humanization is better than any other (unless you're one of those folks who wants Caucasian to be default), but if you have to argue about it, Twilight's eyes always had a slight almond shape to them, which validates an Asian depiction perfectly. FYI, Asians do not all have the same eye shape either; the pony in the pic could be Chinese by color association, but the narrow eye type is actually more characteritic of a Korean heritage. Therefore there is absolutely nothing mutually exclusive about them both being translated into Asian races. |

I don't think there is anything wrong with that xD And buffalo ARE depicted like native Americans, and zebras as African (with a mix of other aborigine stereotypes thrown in). I like your griffon/donkey idea. xD
But ponies are a lot more colorful, not only being sorted into 3 (+1) types by default but also having a lot greater variety. So I tend to imagine them more like modern America, a sort of multi cultural melting pot. The fact that cows, donkeys and others are apparently a part of it helps too. (I don't thionk you could humanize a pig or cow though. But now I want someone to try it! xD) |

I prefer to think Equestria doesn't have direct counterparts of human races, and that it just sometimes references particular cultures i.e. buffallos were supposed to represent some of the native american tribes (not all of them lived in wigwams and wore feathers), and zebras represent cultures of south Africa (like Masaii) but not all black people because Saphire Shores was obviously a parody of African-American singers and she was a pony. With so many sentient species, it would be ridiculous to try to group them all in three categories. |

The real derp about this is that the picture actually does show three different races:
One's an Earth pony. One's a zebra. One's a unicorn. In Equestria, color, hairstyle, accent--all those are NOT indicators of race. What ponies see as "race" is whether or not you have wings or a horn, or if you're an obviously non-pony species. Human concepts of race are totally irrelevant when applied to a world of multicolored pastel ponies. And attempting to include them is just plain stupid considering that there's a fantasy racial makeup that the show's writers have already put in place. |
