Ever since finishing Eternal I cannot for the life of me see Twilight and Celestia in a romantic relationship. Their love is neither romantic or familial, yet they are so much more than friends. Non-romantic life partners is a good way of putting it.
I can't see Twilight and Trixie falling in love either. Every time she looks at her, Trixie will be reminded of her life pretty much hitting the shitter and just how inferior she is. If anything, it'll be the angstiest and most fucked-up relationship ever. "I love you, and I hate you!" "...Which one of those feelings is stronger?" "I don't know!" Luna and Trixie... I can see Luna taking her as a student, but they don't really mesh well enough. Friends is good enough for me, but they don't seem to have a lot of chemistry. But Celestia and Trixie.... The unexpected ship ALWAYS works. |

279 -- Twixie could work, but it would need time, some careful steering, and both of them stepping up outside of romance. Not the sort of thing that could happen believably in a oneshot, but a very rewarding result of a longer story.
Trixie's been pushing ponies away for a long time and Twi would have to reach out to her in a pretty big way, but if anypony could it'd be her. Trixie's been coasting on the boasting for a long time, and would have to step up her game for real to start punching in Twilight's league and ditch the inferiority complex, but if anypony could it'd be her. Basically, associating Twilight with the fall of Trixie's career would have to be replaced by Twilight helping her bounce back more wholesome than ever. |

Actually, Eternal DOES have them go into a romantic relationship, but as you say it's more than just lovers or friends - they love each other deeply and completely and Chapter 7 does show they've got a lot of latent desire for one another. There's several clues to this in the epilogue, but he chose not to mention it outright for various reasons. Besides, hey, after you go through something like that? Watching someone you love crawling through a shattered heart just to stop you from being alone? No-one else is going to really compare. |
