Did a bit of thinking about this when I was watching the song, wall of text powers activate!
The angry/cynical side is canon; the only difference between (c/f)anon is the suggested frequency of her depressive episodes. Once in how much time? A year? Two? - Compare that with how much Pinkamena art we have here. Grimdark Pinkie was always impossible, but it's certainly much harder to justify it. Maybe that's why it's grimdark Pinkamena most of the time nowadays despite that also being OOC, but with limited screentime it's easier to fill in the blanks to fit our use. It may have something to do with Cupcakes' widespread influence codifying the slasher theme for Pinkie. |

Season 1 Pinkie was someone who kept getting things right, Party of One was the first episode where she was terribly wrong. Baby Cakes was one of the first eps where she actually took the time to stop and think of her errors. |

You know, I while back I wondered why cupcakes hadn't "ruined" my perception of Pinkie, but then I realized that I saw "Pinkamena"; her grim dark-side as a completely different character. It was just too out of character for her. |
