Better idea: We need to make a chart of who's related/dating whom and how it changes over the course of the series. Then we need stories to explain why those relationships changed over the course of the series, tied in with the canon events. |

The gavel and the bill really seem to represent branches, as the other post says.
Of course, they could be family *and* elected officials; if cutie marks run in families that might not be unusual in Equestria. (Heck, it's not all that unusual here.) Still, for the moment I'm going with nonrelated, and their hair being streaked just due to dignification of age. |
