They're pegasi with a bat-wing mutation or magic spell done to them or something. Not a new species. Maybe a subspecies.
I really think the pegasi would have the most species diversity, given how diverse birds themselves are. |

If we're going to have this argument, I'd just like to point out that Discord had "the head of a pony," according to Cheerilee. It looks more like a goat to me, but that technically makes him count as a different species of pony if you technically count Return of Harmony as part of Season 2 (which I don't). |

^ We had a mule in "Applebuck Season" that means there had to be a donkey for a mule to be there, so it doesn't count on this as that was season one. |
