I know!
And why do people ask "um, why is this humanized Zecora white"? I mean, she's obviously a white chick. Zebras are from Europe, right? Scandinavia I think?

Clearly racism is magic. What else could it be?
Answer: nothing. The answer is always racism. Oh, you disagree? Racist.

no, its cuz a larger majority of the 1st world poulation is white, and they imagine charictors as themselfs, aka white, and this becomes the norm, so the trend is continued. when black charicictos are drawn, its just not the expected, and people notice it.

Because none of the characters in the show act black, except for Zecora, and Sapphire Shores. It isn't racism.

ughhhh, respect for brony fandom quickly lowering. Look at all this defensive posturing. You find the white form more appealing, and protest when you find examples of your favorite characters bearing an ethnicity that you find less attractive. Simple as that.

This kind of thinking is so far removed from the message of FIM that its hard for me to understand why your even here, and how you call yourself a brony.

Congratulations. Your a bigot, your not alone and your not fooling anyone.

They did studies on this kind of social psychology. About people's ingrained concepts of physical beauty.

"A Girl Like Me " refers to a famous experiment where they passed around identical dolls that had black and white skin colors to children. They found that the kids, both white and black found dark skin color to be less attractive than their white counterparts because of latent bigoted social beliefs that had been fed to them from infancy by their peers, family and the media.

It was an eyeopener about how pervasive such thinking is, about how ingrained it is. Its an outdated belief that needs to be thrown away, and its repulsive to see it defended. Especially in a community that prides itself on love and toleration.

I personally find white people more attractive and relatable, but that's because I'm white. I don't hate black people (one of my friends is an African native), and I don't care when the characters are drawn as black.
That's just the artists own interpretation, and I shouldn't get upset if it's different from mine.

"That had been fed to them from infancy by their peers, family and the media."

Yeah, I'm calling shenanigans. I saw the same thing, but the kids usually picked a skin color closer to their own, not the lighter colored ones.

The Clark's Doll Experiments

Direct Quotes:"The Clarks' doll experiments grew out of Mamie Clark's master's degree thesis. They published three major papers between 1939 and 1940 on children's self perception related to race."

"The doll experiment involved a child being presented with two dolls. Both of these dolls were completely identical except for the skin and hair color. One doll was white with yellow hair, while the other was brown with black hair. The child was then asked questions inquiring as to which one is the doll they would play with, which one is the nice doll, which one looks bad, which one has the nicer color, etc."

"The experiment showed a clear preference for the white doll among all children in the study. These findings exposed internalized racism in African-American children, self-hatred that was more acute among children attending segregated schools."

"In 2006 filmmaker Kiri Davis recreated the doll study and documented it in a film entitled A Girl Like Me. Despite the many changes in some parts of society, Davis found the same results as did the Drs. Clark in their study of the late 1930s and early 1940s"

"Look at all this defensive posturing. You just shoehorned that in. Posturing, huh.

My personal answer: the show was made in mostly white country, almost all voice actors are white, it takes place in setting based largely on medieval Europe, so default skin color of humanized characters would be white to me, unless something suggests otherwise (i.e. Zecora) If FiM was anime, I would imagine humanizations as Asians by default.

The Post asked two questions:
1. why fans protest black versions of FIM.
2. why their is a notable lack of similar protest when drawn white.

I didn't talk about why people don't protest white versions. I talked about why people are bothered by black toned versions of FIM. I didn't shoehorn anything, I addressed a portion of the question.

My message answer overall: Is that ingrained social preferences for race are the reason why people reflexively protest when seeing certain skin tones.

I argue that such beliefs needs to be a thing of the past. That we as people, and we as a community need to move past such thinking.

That we need to not base our tastes and preferences on skin tone and race, but on something of more substance.

To characterize everyone who believes that the FiM cast is in all likelihood one or another race as people who reflexively protest to a skin tone is both asinine and absurd. You're trying to pin an innocent behavior on racism when people state plainly (and with reason) why they believe characters would in all likelihood be portrayed as a certain race. You're trying to create accusatory racism out of intelligent discussion and reason, where racism isn't DEMONSTRATED TO BE PRESENT. Whether to comfort yourself one way or another, you cannot go around characterizing people as defensive racists, posturing to cover their selection of a white doll (asinine and unrelated, I maintain), when the point they're making is one of intelligence, reason and likelihood. There is absolutely no reason for you to smear people as racists when you can't even demonstrate it to be likely, let alone prove it.

"Look at all this defensive posturing. You find the white form more appealing, and protest when you find examples of your favorite characters bearing an ethnicity that you find less attractive. Simple as that."

Prove your accusation of racism. Prove what somebody finds appealing. Prove that what you state from your low horse should be "a thing of the past" is prevalent or relevant to the context of this discussion. Prove or demonstrate that we, as a group (or simply the posters on this image), have based "our tastes and preferences on skin tone and race" and not "something of more substance."

You can't. Because it
HASN'T
FUCKING
HAPPENED.
"Simple as that."

By the way, your last sentance comes intimately close with ignoring race entirely, which, in the context of curbing racism, or in general, is complete fucking nonsense designed to chastise people who think innocently. Oh, and you're an accusatory cunt.

[sarcasm] Want me to find more? I'd be easy because it crops up practically every fucking time a FIM character is displayed as a minority. Its prevalent to the point of being reliable.

You know what annoys me the most? It's when people complain about diversity not being exactly equal. It's when people assume everyone should love every person equally. It doesn't work that way. Humans don't work that way. We cherry pick our friends and our social groups based on many aspects of their humanness, race included. Religion, personality, appearance, hobbies, IT HAPPENS.

For the record, I personally have no problem with making any of the characters black or Asian or Indian or Arab or whatever. It makes for a wonderful change, and people each view the characters through their own lens of what beauty is, and how they picture them as people. But I'm one of those people who view the humanized versions of the characters as matching the race of their voice actors. It doesn't HAVE to be that way, but it is that way for a lot of people. Zecora ends up black because her VA is dark-skinned and zebras are from Africa, which tends to have a lot of black people in it.

But things will not always be equal. Regardless of how hard politicians try to hammer the melting pot vision of the world into our heads, there will always be groups that have either more white people in them, black people, Asians, etc. You should not be admitted into a college just because of your race, you should be admitted because of how good a student you are. You should not be hired at a job just because of your race.

I have two black people at my newspaper -- one is a reporter, one is the vice president of circulation. They are both awesome. But there are also 50+ other white employees who are just as awesome. We're not perfectly equal. It doesn't bother me. What WOULD bother me is if people started bitching at us that we didn't have ENOUGH black employees. I'm in Massachusetts -- there just aren't a lot of them out here.

TL;DR Treasure people, and ponies, based on who they are inside, not what color they are on the outside. Just don't expect a rainbow everywhere you go.

^It's not racist to be attracted to a specific skin color more than others. It's racists to believe that your personal preference or aesthetic sensibility makes you better. That's racism.

I personally think asian women are the most beautiful women on the planet. I also think white girls are hot. I don't find black women very attractive. I don't find blonde hair very attractive. Does that mean I hate blondes?

The thing that most sets back race relations is our inability to talk about them without pointing so many fucking fingers.

So yeah, I couldn't bother to read all this because for the first time ever (for me) it was TL;DR.

I'll just toss my two cents in.

I've only ever gotten antsy about a humanized character being black when it was Twilight. Personally, I've always seen her as either white or asian.

On the reverse I do get a bit irritated when Zecora is humanized as white.

Now as for black mane 6, I've always seen Rainbow Dash as a good candidate for being black. I feel it's something about her personality that would give do that for me.

Now that is sorta racist putting the arrogant and brash pony being the sole black girl, but Pinkie could fit here too.

Everyone's got their own racial preconceptions folks.
